6 Foods that are Damaging Your Health

You are what you eat. Are you eating foods that are promoting your health, or damaging your health? Many bad foods are obviously unhealthy, but there are some foods that are promoted as wholesome or healthy that may actually be doing more harm than good.

Here are six foods that are damaging your health.

1. Soda

Most people know that soda is unhealthy, but just how unhealthy is this popular beverage? According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, there are 10 teaspoons of sugar in a single can of soda and 30-55 mg of caffeine. It’s also loaded with sulphites and artificial food colors.

The sugar in soda also contributes to obesity and diabetes.

According to a study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, drinking just two sodas per week can double your risk of pancreatic cancer.

Soda also creates acid in the body, which can weaken bones and deplete your mineral stores.

2. Energy Drinks

Energy drinks can be just as dangerous as soda. They often contain just as much – or more – sugar, and they also contain dangerously high levels of caffeine.

A survey from the University of Waterloo found that one-fourth of people who drank energy drinks experienced tachycardia, and another 25% had trouble sleeping.

In addition to caffeine, these drinks may also contain other stimulants, including guarana extract and taurine.

3. Cookies and Cake

Cookies, cakes and pastries contain high amounts of refined sugar, flour and fat. Highly processed, packaged snacks are worse for your health than bakery-fresh snacks. But even bakery-fresh snacks should be avoided.

Cookies, cakes and pastries are virtually void of any nutrients. They’re high in calories and often contain trans fats.

4. Margarine

Margarine is often touted as a healthy alternative to butter, but this highly processed food that’s been engineered to look and taste like butter.

Margarine is loaded with artificial ingredients, and typically made using industrial, hydrogenated vegetable oils that increase their trans fat content significantly.

Skip the margarine and stick to real butter from grass-fed cows.

5. Processed Meats

Processed meats are everywhere. We put them in sandwiches, on top of pizza and in frozen meals. If you eat fast food or even frozen chicken nuggets, you’re consuming processed meats.

Deli meats can be particularly unhealthy because they contain high amounts of sodium and nitrates. The American Institute for Cancer Research says that consuming deli meats can increase your risk of colon cancer.

Nitrates are converted into nitrites when digested by the body, which can create nitrosamine, a cancer-causing chemical.

6. Canned Soup

Most of us view soup as a health food, but canned varieties can be damaging to your health. Some cans of soup contain as much as 890 mg of sodium, which is nearly your day’s recommended amount of sodium.

Excess sodium causes the body to retain water, which puts stress on your heart. Eventually, it can lead to high blood pressure and a greater risk of a heart attack.

The American Heart Association says 97% of children consume too much sodium which can lead to organ damage.

In addition to the sodium in soup, there may also be artificial ingredients, colors and processed meats. The lining of the can may also contain Bisphenol A (BPA), which can leach into the food. BPA has been shown to be an endocrine disrupter and can mimic estrogen.
