Ashland July 4 Parade: Lesson in Free Speech

Both the City of Ashland and its Chamber of Commerce were earlier charged with violations of the first amendment so the stage was set for a "civic lesson" at this year's Fourth of July parade. First came the ACLU parade entry featuring "Uncle Sam leading hooded & shackled prisoners", and behind them came Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice and their "controversial political entry."

For 2008 the City of Ashland's Fourth of July parade was an eye opener for the thousands of parade goers who applauded enthusiastically as the demonstrations of "free speech" marched down the main drag in Ashland, Oregon. We hope Ashland and its Chamber of Commerce were not sleeping during class.

City of Ashland Chamber of Commerce VIOLATES the First Amendment!

ASHLAND, OREGON, Independence Day 2008--

Ashland Chamber of Commerce told it CAN NOT Block Freedom of Speech!

The Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice (SOJwJ) and the ACLU have told the Ashland Chamber of Commerce they are in violation of our First Amendment. They can not charge 4th of July parade participants different fees based on the content of the entrant's message. This discrimination has been the practice of the Chamber and it must stop NOW!

From the Demand Letter sent to the Ashland Chamber of Commerce: "The ACLU and the SOJWJ, therefore, respectfully demand that, first, the Chamber alter its fee structure so as not to discriminate based on the content of entrants' message, and second, the Chamber refund the additional payment of $70 paid by SOJwJ for the 2007 Ashland Fourth of July Parade. If the Chamber fails to do both of these things, the ACLU of Oregon and SOJwJ are prepared to file a lawsuit to obtain this relief, plus the recovery of reasonable attorney fees."

EUGENE, OR – The Lane County Coalition Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) are hosting a rally and a march on Sunday, June 29th from the EMU on the University of Oregon Campus. They intend to draw awareness to the impact of the Olympics on the poor and homeless communities locally and globally.

THE ATTACKS ON THE HOMELESS GROWS!
Southern Oregonian relates to the Eugene story:

Ashland Homeless Sweep
Jackson County Sheriff Dept., Ashland police and fire just raided homeless camps above Lithia Park yesterday morning. On federal land they do not even need to warn people to remove their tents and sleeping bags and can just confiscate and destroy them. Heaven forbid we should allow people to sleep outside legally within Ashland city limits. The sky might fall or something...

-Medford, Oregon, Saturday June 7, 2008

We were a couple minutes late when we found parking on Saturday near Union Park in west Medford, Oregon. As we exited the car and made our way towards the gathering in the city park the entire neighborhood was bathed in song. It kept getting louder as we got closer. What an experience to walk along on this warm sunny Saturday and to hear a chorus of voices singing: "WE SHALL OVERCOME"

Brenda and I joined in the crowd of 100 who stood in a circle right there in Union Park. Dave Marston with guitar in hand led the gathering with songs of support. Medford's public response to racism was strong and clear. There will be Zero Tolerance for racism here!

This story is about their journey and their visit with the folk singing legend. Matt Mankins penned this account which was first published in "The Soapbox" (spring 2005) the underground rag produced by the Media Collective at Southern Oregon University.
IS FEAR TRUMPING FACT?
Are cougars, bears, wolves, and other big wildlife really threats? Or can we learn to live with them?

WHAT: “Is Fear Trumping Fact?” is a forum that will separate fact from fiction about wildlife, reveal the realities of wildlife “management,” showcase the ecological importance of predators, and offer tips for living among them. Includes stunning wildlife images and disturbing visuals of animal “control” programs.

Jackson County (located in Southern Oregon on the California border and I-5 corridor) gained new distinction in April, 2008 when elected officials decided NOT to support a proclamation for "Independent Media Week - 2008". By a vote of 2 to 1 Jackson County Commissioners were succinct with their 2007 decision to embrace censorship. Last year the entire Jackson County Library System was shut down for 6 months with officials citing a "lack of funds" as the reason. The library system later opened with greatly reduced hours and services, but only after privatizing the entire operation.
Medford, Oregon

Thanks to the 45 to 50 folks who turned out on another gray, rainy, cool day to participate in the "In Memoriam: 4,000 US Soldiers Dead in Iraq" event. While it wasn't a big crowd, it was an enthusiastic one. The mall security made us abandon our plans to have our program before the march in the little parking lot, so we moved out to the sidewalk and it was fine.

Oregon's Jackson County Library System employees get to have a voice at work. In a HUGE victory for working people Jackson County Library employees will be union. With SEIU Local #503 library workers have a voice at work, again. The right of association, that most important universal human right, has been declared the law in Southern Oregon. LSSI, the private corporation that stole our public library system has broken the law and now must make serious corrections.

Listen to the 2/15/08 edition of the Brain Labor Report radio show to learn more. This show has guest interviews with Buck Eichler who is the President of the SEIU represented Jackson County employees and with Pauline Black who is employed by LSSI as a Clerk at the Ashland, Oregon Library.

"LSSI Must Recognize Union"
Listen Here- http://www.kskq.org/brainlabor/?p=228

Read More, but know that this story FIRST saw the light of day on December 20, 2007 via the Rogue IMC and the Brain Labor Report, both progressive independent sources for news. Independent Media scoops the mainstream corporate version, yet again.

PRIVATIZATION OF OUR PUBLIC SERVICES MUST STOP.
IT MUST STOP NOW!
