I Will Continue To Fight For Single-Payer

Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), 21-01-2010 - 20:03

Congressman Dennis Kucinich I Will Continue To Fight For Single-Payer

This message from Congressman Dennis Kucinich is a godsend for Southern Oregonians who have been fighting for Single Payer health care reform! It has been nerve racking to watch activists who have been tricked into supporting insurance companies and the greedy healthcare (non)system. What a HUGE waste of time, money, and energy! HCAN in particular has sold out the working class with a campaign based on lies and deception. Now we can only hope for one thing to happen in Washington DC. We need nothing short of a quick death to the current corporate sponsored healthcare reform, RIP.

"We stand with Dennis Kucinich. We will keep on working and do whatever it takes to bring about the change that sends insurance companies packing. Let them insure cars and houses but keep them the hell away from our bodies and our health!"--Wes Brain, Rogue Valley Single Payer activist.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce Elected 2009's National Scrooge of the Year

J O B S * W I T H * J U S T I C E, 21-12-2009 - 21:54

DECEMBER 21, 2009--Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice (SOJwJ) announces: U.S. Chamber of Commerce Elected 2009's National Scrooge of the Year.

The Chamber's narrow, radical agenda advocating for anti-worker, profit-focused solutions to the broken health care, labor, and environmental systems garnered them the most votes for the national Jobs with Justice "Scrooge of the Year" award.

Southern Oregon has been alarmed at local Chambers of Commerces with First Amendment violations waged by the City of Ashland's Chamber after its sponsorship of the 2007 Fourth of July Parade. In 2008 SOJwJ and ACLU of Southern Oregon gave the Ashland Chamber of Commerce a Free Speech lesson  http://www.rogueimc.org/en/2008/07/13203.shtml

This year's Scrooge contest pitted the Chamber of Commerce against Bank of America, nominated for their role in the sub-prime lending crisis and failure to extend credit to small businesses. SOJwJ previously shouted out a patriotic warning about BoA on Dec. 12, 2008 with the People's Bail-Out Rally in Medford, Oregon  http://www.rogueimc.org/en/2008/12/14290.shtml

Keep readin' for the full story about the just-elected "2009 National Scrooge of the Year"

Medford Walmart heads towards Oregon Supreme Court

Medford Citizens for Responsible Development, 11-12-2009 - 23:21

Superstore = Supertraffic Medford, Oregon, December 11, 2009--Medford Citizens for Responsible Development (MCRD) has not given up on the fight against powerful Walmart's legal team and the Superstore planned for South Medford. The fight continues and so do the worries about traffic congestion. Building such a monster store will bring on a super traffic nightmare, yet Medford refuses to do a traffic study which is required in their code. The area is already becoming a traffic nightmare even without building a Walmart Superstore.

MCRD has now petitioned the Oregon Supreme Court requesting a review of the earlier Court of Appeals Decision to Overturn a LUBA Ruling in the Matter of Requiring a Traffic Study for the Wal-Mart Superstore. (LUBA is Oregon's Land Use Board of Appeals)

We anticipate a decision by the Court to consider our appeal within 30 to 60 days.

Attached below is the petition for review delivered by MCRD's attorney to the Oregon Supreme Court earlier this week.

Rally for Peace in Medford

Allen Hallmark & Ivend Holen, 30-11-2009 - 03:40

Dear Friends of Citizens for Peace & Justice,

President Obama's expected message to the nation next Tuesday that he will escalate the war in Afghanistan by sending tens of thousands more US troops there has had one positive effect -- it has re-energized the peace movement.

For perhaps the past five years or so, CPJ has sponsored a Rally for Peace from 12 noon to 1 pm on the 4th Saturday of each month in Medford. Often, only three to six people attend these rallies for peace and to protest the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But this month was different. On Saturday some 25 to 30 folks turned out (there was some coming and going during the hour). Check out the attached photos by Ivend Holen, who is a constant participant in almost every progressive activity in this valley.

Senator Wyden's Townhall in Grants Pass, OR

Allen Hallmark Speaks Truth to Power, 15-11-2009 - 03:54

Senator Ron Wyden I attended Ron Wyden's Town Hall in Grants Pass today and it was a far different scene from the one he had in Medford in August. The "tea baggers" didn't show up in any force, although there were plenty of retired military folks and conservatives in the audience that maybe numbered 150 folks. As he did in Medford, Wyden began by honoring a bunch of mostly World War II vets who came in their VFW and American Legion finery.

They handed out tickets to those who wanted to speak and lo and behold, mine was the first one selected. So, I said something to this effect:

BTL:Israeli Military Refusers Bring Their Mes

Distributed by Squeaky Wheel Productions http, 17-10-2009 - 13:40

Israeli Military Refusers Bring Their Message to America

Talks by Israeli military refusers Netta Mishly and Maya Wind, Recorded and produced by Melinda Tuhus

For the past few years, about 200 graduating high school seniors -- both male and female -- have been refusing induction into the Israel Defense Force because they object to Israel's occupation of the West Bank and its treatment of Palestinians both there and inside Israel. They make up just one percent of Israeli citizens who turn 18 each year; the other 99 percent follow the law and join the military.

These refusers founded a group called in Hebrew, "Shminitzim" -- meaning 12th-graders, in reference to the age when Israelis are drafted. Many of them have gone to jail multiple times. Two young women refuseniks just completed a month-long U.S. tour to talk about their experiences and to urge Americans to stop supporting the Israeli occupation through their tax dollars and through the purchase of goods made by Israel in the occupied West Bank.

Netta Mishly and Maya Wind, both 19 years old, spoke about their decision to refuse Israeli military service at an Oct. 6 public forum at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. Mishly got involved in youth organizing at age 15, and after turning 18, she refused to join the IDF, for which she served 20 days in jail. Wind refused induction in December 2008 and spent several weeks in jail and then 40 days in a military prison. Both women have since been declared exempt from military service, avoiding further imprisonment, but assigned to do alternative civilian service. Wind explains that 40 percent of Israeli young people don't serve in the military, but are granted exemptions based on being orthodox Jews, being mentally or physically unfit, or to women who are married.

Inglorious Bastards Film Promotes Terrorism a

Dave David, 16-10-2009 - 22:59

Why was the “psychology” of this movie not more considered in reviews? Yes one can quickly retort that it was “just” a movie, and besides artists have poetic license to be free with their work? Well maybe so, but Mr. Quentin Tarantino addresses a serious subject at a curiously serious time, and therefore he invites serious criticism that he and his critics should get—not a Hollywood club giving wide birth if it was meant to promote more guilt or whatever the U.S. film/ review industry silently accedes as OK—that is a film industry that has become part and parcel of a world not unlike that of Joseph Goebbels.

“End the War in Afghanistan Now!” Rallies for Peace & Film Screening

October 7, 2009 marks the start of the ninth year of the invasion of Afghanistan . On that day, there will be anti-war rallies, marches and vigils in cities and towns throughout the country.

Eight long years after the invasion of Afghanistan , the U.S. and its NATO allies are vastly expanding the war, doubling the numbers of troops. Casualties on both sides are soaring. Resistance to foreign occupation is growing rapidly inside Afghanistan . The war is a disaster for the people who live there. It is also growing disaster for the people here — not only the soldiers and their families, but the tens of millions of people suffering from the economic crisis.

Dahr Jamail in Ashland Wednesday Night

Allen Hallmark, 03-10-2009 - 03:42

If Dahr Jamail's lecture could have been viewed and heard by a national TV audience on a major network last night instead of 100 or so folks at Meese Auditorium on the SOU campus, Americans might be outraged today about the toll the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are taking on our soldiers, on the citizens of Iraq and Afghanistan and on the credibility of our nation. Americans should never have allowed these wars to be launched in the first place. But certainly if they were privy to the kind of information independent journalist Jamail provided us last night, they would be demanding the immediate return home of our troops.

Having spent a long time in Iraq himself as an unembedded reporter and having spent years interviewing American soldiers, sailors and airmen about their experiences, Dahr came loaded with very specific examples of how the Pentagon and our government are abusing the troops and their power to prosecute these two illegitimate wars.

The Tactics of Resistance in an All-Volunteer Military

On May 1st at Fort Hood in central Texas, Specialist Victor Agosto wrote on a counseling statement, which is actually a punitive U.S. Army memo:

“There is no way I will deploy to Afghanistan. The occupation is immoral and unjust. It does not make the American people any safer. It has the opposite effect.”
