Right now our U.S. military is spread out all over the globe. There is no doubt Americans support the troops that point is never questioned. But why our military leaders insist we be spread ourselves out all over the map is another question entirely, one we have a right to be asking. Bob Gates said recently that cuts to US defense would hurt our military might. (

If you're like me, you may be very frustrated that - much as you'd like to - you won't be able to attend SEIU's "Better Way Rally" in Salem this Friday. (Or maybe you ARE going? If so, please share this info anyway!) I'm MIGHTY glad to hear that SEIU is fielding TWO busses from the Southern Oregon area, but unfortunately, I won't be on them. However, I'm NOT going to let this opportunity pass me by without doing SOMETHING! At this point in recent history America has been engaging in nation building in the Middle East since 2001. We went into Afghanistan following the events of 9/11 seeking the people responsible for that terrible tragedy. But, we knew ahead of time setting up a new government would be part of the plan. After all it was in part the Taliban government which became official enemies of the US. We went into Iraq in 2003 because... well the reason still has not been made clear other than some “oops wrong turn” explanation. However, we do know nation building has been a definite part of that mission.

President Obama addressed the nation last night on why the United States is helping out in Libya. He admitted this nation could not always help out where freedom, liberty and democracy were threatened or where there were humanitarian issues, but that in some cases we could. It was his assertion this was one of those times. He also acknowledged the humanitarian effort would be limited in scope, limited in timeframe and not popular with all people back home.

3/11/11 Salem, Oregon -- Intro by Wes Brain: Southern Oregonians travelled to Salem to join with Single Payer health care reformers from all across the state for a day full of activism. A noon time rally on the steps of the Capitol combined with legislative lobby visits and then a hearing before the Oregon House Health Care Committee. Single Payer advocates made the case for House Bill 3510 which will provide better health care for ALL. This news features a report back from Irene who made the trek from the Rogue Valley... I shot a few photos and they are included. My testimony in Salem is recapped in this short video http://vimeo.com/21005467
From Irene: A major philosophical difference that emerged summarized: Whereas single payer advocates repeatedly stated that "health care was a human right" a couple of well-heeled members of Americans for Prosperity (the Koch brothers-funded group) flatly--and chillingly--stated that "health care IS NOT a human right..." Meanwhile, regarding our lobbying efforts, the politicians are adhering to their own "political" personalities on this issue, and quite frankly, supporters know what an uphill battle this will be. Nonetheless, the winds of change which are sweeping the rest of the nation and the world, may indeed eventually even blow into Salem's chambers...--I" (more from Irene below)

12/16/10--"Rogue Valley Veterans For Peace, Chapter 156, and other groups advocating an end to the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan held a vigil today in front of the Josephine County Courthouse. The participants in the Grants Pass vigil included combat veterans from both the Korean and Vietnam wars and was a show of support for the Veterans for Peace march today in Washington D.C. The Washington march resulted in the arrest of 135 people for chaining themselves to the fence surround the White House in protest of our current war economy."

Dear Concerned and Active Citizen Base: The recent uprising of Ashland's houseless population demands a just, safe, and sane rectification of a endemic social dysfunction, namely the criminalization of homelessness and the necessary acts that accompany that status. It is inevitable that this core social issue gets faced in a way that brings to light the full import of the crisis. Disabled, elderly, youth, family, temporary and chronic homelessness and poverty have reached a critical mass. Now is the time to deal with homelessness and poverty in a peaceable, orderly way so that violence can be ruled out as a viable alternative.
THE PUBLIC COMMONS CAN BE RECLAIMED BY THE WILL OF AN ORGANIZED, EDUCATED, NON-VIOLENT PUBLIC

Tuesday (12/7/10) is City Council meeting... bring tents for a short term demonstration during the afternoon and evening. Demand a town hall meeting to address and resolve the current situation of the homeless being harassed, intimidated, and cited for SLEEPING.
Wednesday (12/8/10) morning is JPR Jefferson Exchange where prospectively, 3 homeless voices/advocates will be expressing the concerns of the plight of the poor and homeless.
Thursday (12/9/10) is a secret, non-public meeting between the mayor, housing commission liaison, police chief and spurious voice of the homeless, Aaron Reed from Community Works. God help his soul being in a closed meeting with such a group of potential denizens. May they all come into the light.

In addition, the package would include a 2% reduction in payroll taxes on the employee side, tax breaks for families and students, allowing businesses to write off 100% of the cost of equipment purchases and setting the estate tax at 35% with a $5 million exemption.
