Today the Oregonian ran yet another flawed, misinformed story this time flagging that Oregon PERS members benefits are more generous than those of neighboring states and making a stink that Oregon public workers don't contribute to their retirement based on a flawed study released by the Center for Public Policy at PSU.

Freedom for Albert Woodfox of the Angola 3?
Katti Gray, The Root (reprinted by A3 News), 05-02-2013 - 00:37
After four decades of solitary confinement in the nation's most populated maximum-security prison -- and one of its most historically brutal -- a member of the internationally known "Angola 3" has reasonable cause to expect that he will soon be released, his attorneys and supporters say. The request to set free Albert Woodfox, 65, is being heard by the same federal judge who in 2008 ordered that Woodfox be released, a ruling that Louisiana prosecutors successfully appealed and blocked.

Congress Needs to Extend Emergency Unemployment Insurance - Now
Chuck Sheketoff--Oregon Center for Public Policy, 31-12-2012 - 04:12
THIS IS A STORY FOR ALL OREGON -- Here in Southern Oregon ordinary working people and their families are suffering—rogue valley independent media center volunteer
"CONGRESS NEEDS TO EXTEND EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE - NOW"—by Chuck Sheketoff
Tens of thousands of unemployed Oregonians need Congress to act now to extend Emergency Unemployment Insurance.
Emergency unemployment compensation is helping 29,240 Oregonians who, despite looking for over 26 weeks, have not been hired. That is about the number (29,600) of Oregonians OCPP estimates will abruptly lose benefits on December 29 if Congress does not act to extend the program, reducing the number receiving unemployment compensation support of any kind by a third.
The disappearance of this safety net, however, will have an even wider impact. Also affected will be those who will exhaust their 26 weeks of state benefits after December 29. OCPP estimates that about 12,100 Oregon workers will be in this situation during just the first three months of 2013

Bangladesh fire fuels fight for worker safety
vanessa Houk, 27-12-2012 - 16:32
Separated by more than a hundred years and eight thousand miles, the recent clothing factory fire in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and the New York City Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 are tangled threads that connect across continents and are interwoven into a history of greed and corruption. In the United States, the aftermath of the Triangle fire led to tougher fire code regulations and labor standards that protect workers to this day. Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, factories continue to have dangerous working conditions and US companies still import their goods on a daily basis.
