O2 NOLA Common Ground: Dispatch #3
Laurel reporting from New Orleans , 10-12-2005 - 19:55
I just wrote yesterday but each day here feels like a week of life
experience. Today we joined with the People's Hurricane Relief Network,
Common Ground and a number of black power groups for a march on City
Hall- or what's left of it anyway. We gathered first in Congo Square- a
park with ancient live oaks who were already mature trees when slavery
was in effect here and this was the only place in the city where slaves
were allowed to gather freely and play their drums. Today, a rocking
drum circle like none I've ever seen accompanied a vibrant consortium
of black leaders as they gave stirring speeches to a crowd that reached
thousands by the time we took the streets towards City Hall.

O2 NOLA Common Ground: Dispatch #2
Laurel reporting from New Orleans, 09-12-2005 - 21:55
The organizing phenomenon that is the Common Ground Collective is an incredible sight to see. Common Ground was born the week following the hurricane, by a group of courageous locals and their regional activist allies who initially armed themselves to defend black neighborhoods from roving white vigilantes who were shooting at young black men. Out of that warzone atmosphere has grown an organic crisis response team that has diversified and grown extremely quickly into a sophisticated organization with over a half dozen semi-permanent locations and 30-some programs ranging from health care clinics, distribution centers, a pirate radio station, legal advocacy teams, and now house gutting crews.

WTO Seattle Anniversary and IMC History
Repost from the New York City IMC, 02-12-2005 - 10:21
http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2005/11/61033.html
Many citizens from the Rogue Valley traveled to Seattle six years ago and particpated in the huge protest where people of all flavors banned together to "Just Say No To The WTO."
This historic demonstration also birthed the very first Independent Media Center. Hundreds working in print, radio, television and internet based news journalism converged on the 6th Street IMC headquarters and presented the world a different picture than the censored reports from mainstream's corporate media. This was a huge milestone and should not be forgotten, but celebrated. These were the seeds for the IMC network including our own Rogue Independent Media Center.

Legendary Forest Activist Joan Norman Passes On
Annette McGee Rasch, 24-07-2005 - 02:00
I haven't an idea about how to say this. Joan Norman died today. She was killed instantly in a head on car wreck.
Joan was in the process of moving to Brookings. After having been on a waiting list for two years to get her apartment - a move she wanted primarily for health reasons - the place had just come through and today was moving day. Details are sketchy yet, but apparently she was headed back to the Illinois Valley with her nephew, who is banged up some, but O.K. We don't know yet about the people in the other car. Apparently this happened near Twin Pines, is that still in Calif? More details will be reported later.
