Ashland City Attorney Selection Process

Southern Oregon Community Coalition, 18-07-2007 - 18:43

Southern Oregon Community Coalition worked with City of Ashland to increase transparency and public participation in choosing Ashland's Police Chief (last fall) and city attorney (this spring). After 3 community panels of attorney interviews of 4 'short list' candidates resulting in 2 recommended finalists, disagreement among councilors scuttled the entire process. City attorney selection will now start over, with a proposed higher attorney salary and executive search firm. Southern Oregon Community Coalition protested the action and recommended 4 positive steps to resolution in this open letter.

Sneaky Greg Walden Townhall Comes on July 3rd - Brings Protest and Testimony

Medford peace group to protest Walden’s “town hall” meeting
CPJ once again asks the time-honored question: “Where’s Walden?”

Citizens for Peace & Justice will rally outside the Jackson County Courthouse Auditorium on Oakdale in Medford from 10 to 10:30 am next Tuesday, July 3rd, before Rep. Greg Walden, R-OR, begins his “town hall” meeting to protest its inadequacies.

The reason for the protest is that Walden responded to calls for a town hall meeting on the cost of the Iraq War to Oregon by scheduling a one-hour meeting from 10:30 to 11:30 am on a weekday when few working people can attend. He also scheduled a similar meeting in Grants Pass for 1:30 pm to give him a good excuse for the Medford meeting not to run long.

Southern Oregon Pride is an event in which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered individuals, their friends, and families gather to promote visibility and validate their existence in a safe and comfortable environment. Now, more than ever, we need this event to be a success. The Center is in danger of closing due to a lack of volunteers and intermittent financial support.

Southern (Oregeon) hospitality played on out when a half dozen of our group from down south joined Women in Black for their weekly stand in Roseburg, Oregon. Twenty Five stood tall in a globally recognized way to silently call very steadily for peace. Solidarity for PEACE happened in Roseburg today, too.

The World Social Forum began on January 25 with a march from the biggest slum in Africa, Kibera (the location of the movie Constant Gardener) to Uhuru Park (Freedom Park). A huge stadium was filled with street puppets, banners for every social justice cause under the African sun, gigantic multi-colored PACE flag, signs that said "The World's Number 1 Terrorist" over a picture of our commander in chief, and people in blazing African colored dresses, saris, hijabs, those sporting Mohawks and just every stripe and color all rocked out to the music.

The past december 28th a private clinic where abortions are practizied was attacked, it is a new example of the fascist agressions rise that is going on in Madrid in the last months.

With this demonstration, the Madrid Antofascist Coordinating Comitee, with some women collectives, denounciates this situation and the fact that the Spanish State denies the right to abortion, wich forces the women to turn to this private clinics.
