Giving Voice to Ohio Workers is a Win for All Workers

S E C R E T A R Y * O F * L A B O R, 11-11-2011 - 05:34

* * * Secretary Solis * * * This victory is for all workers! In Southern Oregon early this year We Stood Up in solidarity with Wisconsin workers when they were under attack. Strong public rallies in both Medford and Ashland were consistent with a working class message of solidarity. People get it. We are the 99%. We will build a strong working class—Wes Brain

During an Ohio labor referendum Tuesday, a majority of voters rejected a state law that would have limited the collective bargaining rights of thousands of teachers, firefighters and police officers. "Ohio has made it clear: these dedicated public servants still need a seat at the table to demand fairness, dignity and respect — especially in tough economic times. Through their unions, they have a voice in their workplace, in their future and, most importantly, in our future," said Secretary Labor Hilda Solis in a statement.

Stop the machine! Create a New World!

Southern Oregon, 28-09-2011 - 13:10

STOP THE MACHINE! CREATE A NEW WORLD!
CALL TO ACTION!
OCTOBER 6TH
DOWNTOWN PLAZA IN ASHLAND, OREGON

October 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. On October 6, 2011, we will stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Washington, D.C., where a huge rally will be taking place. We stand with them for a better world, for a world which refuses to sit in drugged silence as the system around it perpetuates oppression and the illegal wars that impose it. We will stand together against economic exploitation and demand that our economy meets human needs instead of Wall Street profits.

For too long we have stood idly by, hiding our faces from the suffering around us, hoping that it will disappear on its own or that some mythical Other will save us from our own society. It is time for us to wake up, to wake up to the fact that we create the substance of our society and that against the determined will of the people nothing can stand; we must take courage and act. Neither time nor a different president will heal the wounds in our world; only we the people can. We are up for the task. Together we can create the future we envision of peace, justice and equality.

Wobbly skit is a Tombstone Tales hit!

WOBBLY FREE SPEECH MONUMENT CAMPAIGN, 07-07-2011 - 21:40

Wobbly skit cast: Ralph Browning, Jason Houk, Vanessa Houk, Ivend Holen 1911 IWW Free Speech History Told with Tombstone Theatrics

The early reviews are in and this year's Tombstone Tales in Ashland, Oregon puts the spotlight on a skit that is timely, educational and fun! The Wobbly Free Speech theatrics take place in the Ashland Cemetery (right next to Safeway) with a five minute-long skit that tells the story of what happened 100 years ago...

It was February, 1911 when determined men, over 100 members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW, nicknamed "Wobblies") road the rails in boxcars south from Portland, Oregon. After being kicked off the train in Ashland by the Railroad Police the Wobblies in an extreme act of bravery took off on foot marching up and over the Siskiyou Mountains on the Oregon and California border.

Bound for Fresno, California to support striking farmworkers the Wobblies marched up to 150 miles in an incredible act of solidarity which is not going to be forgotten. So say's Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice who has embarked on a campaign to create a Wobbly Free Speech Monument to honor these brave men of one hundred years ago.

Southern Oregon Jobs with Justice urges Walmart to be transparent about its political and charitable giving. New political reports shows difference between what Walmart says and where it gives.

Medford, Oregon— In response to new research released this week by Walmart Watch about the company’s political contributions, elected officials have been asked to urge Walmart to be transparent about its political and charitable giving. A vote on how political contributions are disclosed is expected at today’s annual shareholders’ meeting.

This Medford Walmart warning has a history. State Representative Peter Buckley’s concerns about Walmart expanding with a South Medford supercenter go back to 2005 with this video warning  http://rogueimc.org/media/2005/11/5580.mov (11-10-05 press conference Central Point, OR).

Tata Noah chief of Indigenous communities

Juan Esteban Yupanqui Villalobos, 18-03-2011 - 06:26

lives in the peruvian mountain My grandfather walked with a very long stick adorned with many allegories. Tata Noah told me long ago that it represented our true nation, which was all unknown, because many of those living in the village had given in to the viciousness of the white people and did not follow the customs of our fathers. That hurt my Tata, so when I arrived, he ever and ever told me many things and stories of our nation...

Single Payer Health Care Reformers in Salem, Oregon

E V E R Y B O D Y * I N * * N O B O D Y * O U T, 13-03-2011 - 17:00

Dr. Joe Eusterman 3/11/11 Salem, Oregon -- Intro by Wes Brain: Southern Oregonians travelled to Salem to join with Single Payer health care reformers from all across the state for a day full of activism. A noon time rally on the steps of the Capitol combined with legislative lobby visits and then a hearing before the Oregon House Health Care Committee. Single Payer advocates made the case for House Bill 3510 which will provide better health care for ALL. This news features a report back from Irene who made the trek from the Rogue Valley... I shot a few photos and they are included. My testimony in Salem is recapped in this short video  http://vimeo.com/21005467

From Irene: A major philosophical difference that emerged summarized: Whereas single payer advocates repeatedly stated that "health care was a human right" a couple of well-heeled members of Americans for Prosperity (the Koch brothers-funded group) flatly--and chillingly--stated that "health care IS NOT a human right..." Meanwhile, regarding our lobbying efforts, the politicians are adhering to their own "political" personalities on this issue, and quite frankly, supporters know what an uphill battle this will be. Nonetheless, the winds of change which are sweeping the rest of the nation and the world, may indeed eventually even blow into Salem's chambers...--I" (more from Irene below)
