Congress Needs to Extend Emergency Unemployment Insurance - Now

Chuck Sheketoff--Oregon Center for Public Policy, 31-12-2012 - 04:12

OCPP Director Chuck Sheketoff THIS IS A STORY FOR ALL OREGON -- Here in Southern Oregon ordinary working people and their families are suffering—rogue valley independent media center volunteer

"CONGRESS NEEDS TO EXTEND EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE - NOW"—by Chuck Sheketoff

Tens of thousands of unemployed Oregonians need Congress to act now to extend Emergency Unemployment Insurance.

Emergency unemployment compensation is helping 29,240 Oregonians who, despite looking for over 26 weeks, have not been hired. That is about the number (29,600) of Oregonians OCPP estimates will abruptly lose benefits on December 29 if Congress does not act to extend the program, reducing the number receiving unemployment compensation support of any kind by a third.

The disappearance of this safety net, however, will have an even wider impact. Also affected will be those who will exhaust their 26 weeks of state benefits after December 29. OCPP estimates that about 12,100 Oregon workers will be in this situation during just the first three months of 2013

The Fiscal Cliff is an Excuse for Austerity

Another Excuse for Austerity, 29-12-2012 - 00:10

The fiscal cliff is a bipartisan excuse to introduce austerity measures in the form of "needed" cuts to social safety net programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The stage is set for "Jason vs. Freddy" or Obama vs. Boehner as we the people wait to see which politician serial killer will be cutting the U.S. people with their sharp knives of austerity.

More Proof of Chupacabra than Fiscal Cliff

Bloodthirsty Goatsuckers in DC!, 28-12-2012 - 00:03

The bipartisan hype over the so-called "fiscal cliff" is an attempt my the status quo to institute severe austerity measures that would effect seniors, disabled and other people dependent upon the social safety net that is set up on the chopping block by BOTH Democrats and Republicans. There may be more evidence of the mythical chupacabra (goat sucker) than there is proof of any upcoming fiscal cliff. Either way we are dealing with some really mangy bloodsuckers!

Fiscal Cliff is a Hoax

Richard Eskow, 13-12-2012 - 20:20

The "fiscal cliff" comedy routine in Washington DC is a staged act where Democrats play the "good cop" who want to tax the rich and cut social welfare programs vs. the "bad cop" Republicans who don't want to tax the rich and promise heavy cuts on social welfare programs. Where is the voice of reason that says maybe this so-called fiscal cliff isn't really such a big deal after all?

Too Much Disrespect! RRAW, Rogue Residents Against Walmart is in the process of possibly changing our name to RRAWWR - Rogue Residents Against Walmart Worker Retaliation.

RRAWWR asserts that most of the workers get so few hours that they qualify for food stamps, get no health or pension benefits until they have been with the corporation so many years, and that the Walton family has accumulated as much wealth as nearly half the US population by depriving their workers of a living.

Medea Benjamin's keynote address at the Peace House 30th anniversary celebration

Allen Hallmark, 22-10-2012 - 15:23

Medea Benjamin An abridged introduction from author Allen Hallmark follows...

Today I decided to share an article about Medea Benjamin's speech last Friday evening (Nov. 19, 2012). I believe that what she had to say about Pakistan and drone warfare is important enough to ask you to consider reading this longish article, which I composed this morning from my notes. Thanks.

Medea Benjamin is one of the co-founders of CodePink and Global Exchange and has been a powerful advocate for peace and economic and social justice for the past 30 years. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize along with other women in 2005 and was the 2010 recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Prize.

Medea is just back from Pakistan where she was a leader of a delegation of peace and justice advocates who went there to show Pakistanis that there are many Americans who want the U.S. to stop killing Pakistani civilians with drone attacks. She received the Marjorie Kellogg National Peacemaker Award at the Peace House 30th Anniversary Dinner at Southern Oregon University on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2012. Ms. Benjamin’s most recent book, Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control, was published earlier this year and informed the speech she gave at the Peace House dinner. Keep reading to see my summary of her speech...

Undignified Corporate Takeover ➡ Ashland Community Hospital

S T O P * D I G N I T Y * H E A L T H, 19-10-2012 - 20:55

Selling Out OUR Community (Hospital) Here is the latest on the "Corporate Takeover" in (so-called) progressive Ashland, Oregon!

Following you will find a well written update on how things stand regarding the current takeover of our community hospital. Our city council is run by the chamber of commerce and they line up time and time again to do the bidding for the 1%. The privatization of what we locally have owned continues and it hurts to see this happening not just here, but everywhere.

Why Chavez Won BIG! A Comparison Between the

Mark Vorpahl, 09-10-2012 - 05:30

U.S. workers and those who are unemployed are frequently told that the current presidential elections are among the most important in this country’s history. With continuing high unemployment and underemployment, declining wages, and looming massive cuts to social programs that help workers, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, we are at a grave point regarding the direction of this country. However, the policies of both presidential candidates and their parties have perpetuated the devastating effects of the Great Recession for workers. Wall Street, the banks, the corporations, and the wealthy have been the beneficiaries of these policies while the only thing workers have received has been more sacrifices.
