Labor Day Special: The American Dream & Its Reality: Pushing Back Against The Plutocracy!

BUILDING BRIDGES RADIO, MIMI ROSENBERG & KEN NASH, 02.09.2012 19:14

No, say it ain’t so – can it really be that the Democratic National Convention(DNC) had the chutzpa to convene, of all days, on Labor Day, in a nonunion convention hall, in a right to work state? Well, it’s true! So, there’s all the more reason to join and build bridges with the worker advocates converging in Charlotte this week.

The American Dream & Its Reality: Pushing Back Against The Plutocracy!

A Four-Hour Building Bridges Labor Day Evening Special 7–11pm EST

No, say it ain’t so – can it really be that the Democratic National Convention(DNC) had the chutzpa to convene, of all days, on Labor Day, in a nonunion convention hall, in a right to work state? Well, it’s true! So, there’s all the more reason to join and build bridges with the worker advocates converging in Charlotte this week. We will bring you on the ground coverage with the No Papers,No Fear undocumented immigrants, who risked, and whose riders were arrested, bringing their freedom bus caravan from Arizona to the DNC; southern worker coalitions organizing public and private sector workers for labor rights in their Southern Workers Assembly; and Occupy and other activists from across the country all converging on Wall Street South (the second largest concentration of finance capital in the U.S., after N.Y.C.). We’ll also check in with organized labor and see how their efforts to install labor planks in the party platform are doing. From New Jersey, to the West Coast we’ll checkout the fight back by the working class on this Labor Day.

And we’ll have our own convergence in studio, with just some of those joining us, Pania Umzuega, Saladin Muhammad, Heraldo Torres, Cornel West, Yen Alcala, Frances Fox Piven, Peter Edelman, Heather McGee, Larry Hamm, Angaza Laughinghouse, Darrick Hamilton, Avis Jones-DeWeever , Hector Figueroa, David Swanson and a performances by Rha Goddess, Rebel Diaz, and Lilia Downs as we put in place the people’s planks for a real platform to eradicate poverty and create jobs for all – with dignity and democracy.

For workers, the recession has brought only economic hardship. But, for corporate America, it has meant the opportunity to mold the economy into something approximating the Third World model: vast wealth, power and privilege for those at the top, and chronic unemployment, falling wages, and inadequate or nonexistent social services for the rest of society. The mantra of the Republicrats has been to slash wages and benefits at a time of heightened need.
