genetically engineered sugar beet project being carried out by SYNGENTA corp, Please help Stop This. thanx
I am an organic farmer and seed grower: Today I learned about a genetically engineered sugar beet project being carried out by SYNGENTA corporation, right here in Ashland, Oregon, that is scheduled for 2012 planting in just 1 week! Pollen from these plants may travel 6miles to cross pollinate with other beets and chard. This is twice the length of my town of 22,000 people. I was told that projects like this are happening all around the valley, and that perspective land owners are being sought out for these projects and associated land leases. Land owners are just trying to get some farming activity going on their land. Can you blame them? They know not, a better way. If you eat chard or beets, no less, care to have them produced by your local farmer, you should care about this project. CAN WE COME TOGETHER. . . . .to start a campaign to declare our region GE/GMo-free?
We must come together now, to and say "yes to what is possible. YES to clean (nitrate/pesticide free water), YES to increased organic matter in our soils (more carbon, water & nutrient retention in our soils), YES to our food svereignty, YES to our freedom of choice. YES to our voice as a community. This is all we truly have control over.
The window of opportunity is here, with the Joel Salatin visit scheduled for 15-16 March in the Rogue Valley. Who is interested to organize, like our friends just south of the board, in Siskiyou County (see below)?

Hello Community,
For those interested, Mary Thomas of Mt. Shasta will be putting on a signature gathering training for the Just Label It GMO initiative in Caifornia. The goal is to get 3,000 signatures in Siskiyou County so that we can vote in November to require that all foods containing genetically modified ingredients must be so labelled.
The training will be this Saturday, Feb. 25th at 2:30 to 4:00 pm at Nature's Kitchen in Yreka on 412 South Main Street.
