Patients Protest Oregonian OpEd

Medical marijuana patients protest Oregonian newspaper calling medical marijuana a “charade.”

Medical marijuana patients plan to protest at the Oregonian newspaper office at 1320 SW Broadway at 11am Thursday morning July 29. Patients are angered by a July 25, 2010 editorial about Initiative 28. that described medical marijuana as a “charade.”

The Oregonian editorial claimed that anyone can get a card and said, “…the whole wink-and nod farce that has characterized the politics of medical marijuana has become downright offensive.” The oped went on to say that initiative 28 …”isn’t about medical marijuana or people
suffering,“ and that supporters of Initiative 28 don’t have the courage to call for legalization.

“We strongly disagree,” said Alice Ivany, one of the patients petitioning to create a dispensary system, “Initiative 28 is all about carefully regulating medical marijuana so patients can benefit from it with a minimum of abuse.”

“This editorial calling medical marijuana a charade is insulting to all the legitimate patients who benefit from medical marijuana. We are not faking illnesses to get high. We are seeking relief from our suffering. We shouldn’t be insulted by the Oregonian because marijuana helps us,“ said Jim Klahr, chief petitioner of Initiative 28 and a registered medical marijuana patient. “Patients who use pharmaceutical drugs do not get this abuse.”

“We have been struggling for twelve years with a law that makes it difficult to get medicine to the people that need it most. We are trying to fix it,” he said.

Patients will ask to meet with the Oregonian editorial board to present their case. Backers of Initiative 28 will present the Oregonian with books, articles and other materials that outline clearly that marijuana is medicine.

marijuana grown with man made chemicals
30.07.2010 - 20:07
too bad the legitimate arguement for de criminalizing mary jane still cant determine the differnce between outdoor grown proper and entreprenuers who dose indoor with man made chemicals. some who fail to get a real good t.h.c. content end up dosing the street weed with toxic additives just to mess up people more... distinguish the differnce or lose the legitmacy of decriminalization.. stop the p.c.p. and angel dust saturating the street...know the difference between man made attempts to duplicate nature and outdoor proper...
