Vets for Peace in Grants Pass Boatnik Parade

Grants Pass, Oregon, Boatnik Parade - Saturday, May 23, 2009

Lined up very near the front of the parade immediately behind other veteran groups Veterans for Peace #156 marched with a clear message for peace. I didn't hear one derogatory remark or see one middle finger and I think that was the first time I have ever seen this happen when publicly standing up for peace. Yes, there were a few "guys with folded arms" as another VfP marcher pointed out, however all had restraint. One woman's voice from the crowd still rings in my head: "thank you for doing this"--Wes Brain, VfP156

Here are some pics from yesterday's parade. It was a real honor to march with VfP#156. The crowd was awesome, I heard the local TV news last night saying the second largest parade in Oregon! I guess that would mean behind Portland's Rose Parade. The size of the crowd really was a big surprise and after discussing it back and forth with VfP marcher Ivend I do concede the 2009 Boatnik parade was bigger than Ashland's July 4th -- and it nears a crowd of twenty thousand.
