Salem – The Rural Organizing Project’s 16th Annual Rural Caucus and Strategy Session will take place in Salem this upcoming Sunday, March 15th and Monday, March 16th. ROP members and allies from all across rural and small town Oregon descend onto Willamette University campus to build the power of the progressive movement in their communities. The Caucus is the place where rural activists meet face-to-face to strategize about creating vibrant rural communities in the face of crisis and conservativism.

With the economy casting a dark shadow and rural communities experiencing crushing poverty, the Caucus will explore building a new economy that is by and for the people of Oregon.

What does rural and small town Oregon need from a government package and what innovative solutions can we create on our own? ROP will showcase local examples from across the state of communities that are taking matters into their own hands and taking care of each other’s needs with an eye toward social justice.

While the economic crisis is the most notorious problem, other challenges continue to plague rural communities, such as immigration justice, the wars abroad and access to resources. There will be workshops on Just & Humane Immigration Reform, Running Local Initiatives, Peace Beyond Iraq & more.

The Caucus is a time for demonstrating our collective power with a March on the Capitol to Stop the Wars in Iraq & Afghanistan; Keep the Guard in Oregon and a day of Legislative Visits.

This Caucus is part of a 17-year long legacy of the Rural Organizing Project to advance progressive power in a place that the Radical Right has claimed as their territory, rural Oregon. ROP was formed around the fight against Measure 9 in 1991 and we continue to fill the void of progressive multi-issue political organizing in rural Oregon.
