Rally and Candle Vigil for Peace.

During the day Saturday on the Ashland Plaza approximately 40 people joined with rallies and marches around the globe to stand in solidarity with those in Gaza to say “We will not be Silent!” and to “End the Siege Now!”.
The Rally was followed by a vigil at 7pm. It was a very cold Saturday evening on January 10th when over 20 people joined in a circle in Ashland's downtown plaza. Candles glowing with compassion silently shined light on the horrific killing which has been taking place in the Middle East.
The Ashland rally and vigil were forms of the many demonstrations that took place all around the world.
Here are a couple photos of the candelight vigil in Ashland, Oregon...
At the beginning of the rally the Palestinian flag waved in the wind as Kamal Hassan started things off with a very powerful speech about why the violence needs to end in Gaza. It was followed by a short “die-in” on the plaza to remember all those who have been impacted by the violence in Gaza. Gerry Cavanaugh stood up and gave a passionate speech which was followed by Rogue Valley Code Pink. Code Pink sang a number of songs, some upbeat and others solemn. There were a few tears in the audience as the “choir” sang “What would you do?”.
After the rally people continued to stand with their signs alongside Women in Black as WIB held their weekly silent vigil.
Saturday evening Peace House hosted a candlelight vigil to mourn the lives lost in recent acts of violence in the Middle East and to call for an end to the violence there.

Hear selected speeches and watch footage of this protest, part of a series of actions of growing intensity and size in Chicago. "Yesterday, the United States Senate voted on a resolution that backs an Israeli attack on Gaza. They are cowards," said one of the speakers. "We reject our government's complacency in these crimes, and we hold our government accountable just as we hold Israel accountable, because it is our government which feeds Israel one third of our foreign aid budget while we neglect our youth, our elderly and our disenfranchised communities," another speaker noted.
