Vavra to Run for City Council, Position #5
ASHLAND - July 8 - Pam Vavra today officially announced her candidacy for Ashland City Council, Position #5.
Vavra is best known for leading the recent campaign to re-open the Ashland Public Library. She currently serves as Chair of the mayor-appointed Citizens' Library Advisory Committee and is also acting Executive Director of Peace House, a local non-profit that promotes non-violent social change through education and conflict resolution.
Vavra is running for office because, she says, "Ashland's challenges will be better met by leaders who can succeed at encouraging broader, deeper, more meaningful citizen participation in decision-making. Effective financial and environmental stewardship requires all hands on deck, working together as a team."
Vavra holds a B.S. Degree with a double major in Mathematics and Psychology. She worked for 20 years as an engineer in applied research and earned a Fellowship in Artificial Intelligence.
Since she and her husband moved to Ashland in 2002, Vavra has worked to prevent the establishment of a nearby rock quarry, permit instant runoff voting (a form of preference voting), and preserve charter protections of water and parks. She was elected to serve as Co-Chair of the Jackson County Pacific Green Party in 2003.
In her former community, Vavra worked on campaigns for living wage and historic preservation measures, and was elected President of her neighborhood group.
Vavra suggests, "Voters who look for technical and business management credentials combined with strong communication and consensus-building skills will want to support me, as will those who look for a track record of preserving our resources (including our library), enhancing our democratic process and promoting respectful civic engagement."
Vavra has pledged to abide by the voluntary cap on campaign expenditures. She welcomes questions and concerns and can be reached at
