Report from "Let's Protest the War" March

Liisa, 03.05.2008 21:33

Today in Ashland approx 75 people marched to say "Let's say No To War". This march was organized by SOU Students and was alive and full of energy. The words of Emma Goldman "If I can't dance I do not want your revolution" were put into action today.

From 2 to 3pm people started meeting up in front of the SOU Student Union were there was drumming, singing and sign making.

At 3pm about 50 people started out through the "Iraq Body Count Exhibit" and then headed down Siskiyou. There was chanting and drumming as we headed downtown. At times you could hear chants like "We Want Peace" echoing throughout the crowd. There were people on the sidewalk as well as the bike path. At one point I looked over as we were passing Safeway and noticed a group of about 10 people out in the middle of the road on Siskiyou marching down the street. As we walked there was lots of horn honking and peace sings. In fact some of the folks who were driving by pulled there cars over, parked and joined the march. As we started to walk into downtown people started to come out of the stores to see what all the commotion was about. There was clapping, peace signs and smiles from the bystanders.

By the time we stopped at the Plaza there were 75 to 100 people marching in opposition to the war. The Rally ended at Lithia park as people had a chance to say a few words and joined in a circle. After the March and Rally "officially" ended a small group of people continued to march through downtown Ashland.
