STOP GORDON SMITH ! ! !
Dear friends of the environment,
One of the most important votes you'll make next November, after your vote for a new progressive president, will be your vote for U.S. Senator. We don't need six more years of Republican Gordon Smith representing Oregon. Oregon is a green state and needs two green senators.
That's why I'm asking you to join the Stop Gordon Smith Campaign at 12 noon next Monday, April 21st, at 1175 E. Main St., outside the building that houses Smith's Medford office to demand that he support legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The argument about whether Global Warming is happening and whether humans burning humongous amounts of fossil fuels has contributed greatly to the rate of its increase has long been over in the scientific community. It's a reality.
Unfortunately, the Bush Administration aided and abetted by members of the Senate and Congress like Oregon's own Gordon Smith, have done little but place roadblocks in the path of action needed to slow and eventually reverse the trend.
Gordon Smith has taken millions of dollars from special interests, including nearly $1.5 million from corporate interests like Big Oil. More often than not, he dances to the tune they play.
On the other hand, Sen. Ron Wyden is a co-sponsor of the Climate Security Act. It would cap greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, transportation and manufacturing sources at 2005 levels in 2012, and ratchet them downward every year after that. Smith hasn't agreed to vote for the bill, but he has promised to vote to end any attempt to block the bill by threatened filibuster.
We need to put pressure on Smith to join Wyden in supporting this important piece of legislation.
So, join us at 12 noon on Monday to demand that Smith do the right thing. And if you have differences with Smith on other issues, feel free to make your sign and join us to express yourself on those issues as well.
Please forward this email to your email groups. We need as many people as possible to gather on Monday to help Stop Gordon Smith!
