KSKQ This Week #82

KSKQ This Week #82 - 04-16-08 Cindy Sheehan on KSKQ, 4th Indi-Media Week

A special note about tuning in KSKQ 94.9 lpfm:
Most home FM tuners / Receivers do not have external antennas attached because most FM radio stations broadcast 5000 to 10,000 watts or more. We are only broadcasting at 60 watts at this time and we are not line of sight to Ashland. That means our signal is bounced off the mountains across the freeway. Please be patient with us as we baby step our way up to our allotted 100 watts very soon. One possible way to receive our signal better it to attach any external antenna to your home FM receiver. If you have an external, that would work even better. You can buy external antennas at radio shack from $3.50 to $39.99.
thank you...KSKQ

THE JEFFERSON CENTER PRESENTS AN EVENING OF TUNES 'N 'TOONS ON THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE

Steve Benson, 1993 Pulitzer Prize-winning daily editorial cartoonist for the (Phoenix) Arizona Republic, and Dan Barker, co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, will headline The Jefferson Center’s Spring Lecture program at 7:30 pm April 26th in the Rogue River Room, Stevenson Union, Southern Oregon University. They call their presentation Tunes 'n 'Toons, a lighthearted look at the contemporary American religion scene in this election year, with special emphasis on the subject of the separation of Church and State. Admission $10 (Students $5 with ID)

Benson, a former Mormon, is the grandson of the late Ezra Taft Benson, once president of the Church of the Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). Steve Benson has distinguished himself by his daily editorial cartoons, mostly political, which have been printed and displayed around the world. He is an entertaining speaker and cartoonist, often bringing his audiences to gales of laughter. Benson has become an outspoken speaker, who has teamed up with Dan Barker to present a humorous look at religion in the news with their unique music and cartoon comedy revue. In 2002, Benson was presented the Emperor Has No Clothes Award by the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

Barker, a teenage evangelist at age 15, served as a Protestant missionary and maintained a touring musical ministry for seventeen years. An accomplished pianist, record producer, arranger and songwriter, he worked mainly with Christian music companies. After five years of study, Barker announced in 1984 that he had left religion. Shortly thereafter, his autobiographical story of de-conversion and critical analysis of Christianity, Losing Faith in Faith: >From Preacher to Atheist was published. Barker has appeared on TV talk shows, including twice with Oprah Winfrey, in addition to ABC’s “Good Morning America,” “Religion and Ethics News Weekly” on PBS, on Fox News, and Court TV.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Turning Point: The Next Generation A Public Lecture & Conversation on Sustainable Futures with Prescott College President Dr. Dan Garvey APRIL 24th Stevenson Union SOU 7pm FREE event...

“The survival of the planet as we’ve known it may well depend on a multi- generational movement that places more power and control in the hands of the young.”

– Dr. Dan Garvey

May 3, 2008 - (Prescott, AZ) What are the challenges facing the next generation? How can we best help them to prepare for what lies ahead?

Dr. Dan Garvey, President of Prescott College, presents a thoughtful approach to important questions for our future leaders in his presentation entitled Turning Point: The Next Generation. This is the second topic and second year for the national Imagine: Sustainable Futures Dialogues.

All events are free of charge and begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. After the lecture, Dr. Garvey will mediate an open discussion about the opportunities available for citizens and leaders to imagine and create the future we would like to live in, both in our personal lives and for the public good.

Dr. Garvey’s approach is rooted in the belief common within experiential education that all members of society, from students to public leaders, are resources for social transformation. “Prescott College has always challenged our students and faculty to think confidently and creatively about what it is we can do to make the world a better place,” he explains. “Our students leave here with a solid grasp of the creative thinking and collaborative, practical action needed to make positive, lasting change. I hope the Dialogues will be a forum through which many others can come together to think collaboratively about solutions, and to find the hope and encouragement we all need in difficult times.”

For more information please visit www.prescott.edu.

Sunday 2pm-4pm First Nations Radio: Dan Wahpehpah, Jaimie Wheeler, and Jane Ayers hosts. Our focus is to bring you Native music (traditional and current), information and education on issues revolving around indigenous rights, sovereignty, land use struggles for Native people, environmental issues affecting local tribes, cultural restoration and preservation, information on our local grassroots organization, Red Earth Descendants (RED) and the events RED sponsors in our community.
First Nations Radio on KSKQ allows us to share our goals and vision as intertribal people with the ultimate vision of helping to create a healthy community and environment for the next Seven Generations of life.

Greetings R.E.D. Community and Friends, We will begin having our weekly business/crafting meetings at Michael's house for this coming season (2165 Hwy. 99, Ashland--"next door" to the Jackson Wellsprings) so that we can better facilitate the crafting we plan to do for our Elder Honoring Giveaway at our next event, the Elder/Youth Conference in June.

Meetings will continue to take place on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.. We plan to combine organizational business with the making of Giveaway items. No crafting experience necessary! We plan and learn as we go. The Elder/Youth Conference is set for June 20-23, tentatively (and most likely) at EarthTeach Forest Park again this year. Since this is a 4 day event, it is BIG and quite involved. We can use ALL the help you are willing to give. The crafting we'll be doing at weekly meetings will be part of a big Giveaway to elders, youth and special helpers at this conference. In the tradition of Giveaway, we cherish this process of making things for the People. It is a big honor.

Thank you for being part of this community. Blessings, Jaimie

Special Letter to our members and supporters of KSKQ.

Dear Community Radio Supporters!

KSKQ-LP, 94.9 FM, is very pleased to announce that we are broadcasting over the air at last! Right now if you live in the southern part of Ashland, you should be hearing us loud and clear. We still have a few technical and FCC challenges to overcome in order to expand the signal, but we’ve got our engineers working on that and expect the issues to be resolved this Saturday.
In order to reach all of Ashland and beyond, we need your financial support.

In the last six months, we also applied for a full-power non-commercial educational license and we have doubled the number of producers who broadcast regular LIVE on-air programming at the station. Take a look at our website, www.kskq.org, for our weekly schedule. View a full description of our daily programming and listen to us live via the internet. Did you know that we’ve been streaming our radio content over the internet continually for the last three years? We’re very proud of that accomplishment!

We must be able to reach all of Ashland over the airwaves before we can campaign for business underwriters; therefore financial support from people like you, who have donated in the past, is very important. We recently mailed out this letter, with our first printed monthly schedule and donations are starting to trickle in. Also in this letter was enclosed, an envelope that outlines several donation options. All contributions are tax-deductible through our parent organization, the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon,

 http://www.mcaso.org
a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We also offer underwriting opportunities for your business on our website and in our weekly electronic newsletter, KSKQ This Week, which goes out to over 800 local people, and is marketed to 5000 possible readers.

We encourage you to come down to the station at 330 E. Hersey #2, in Ashland, to see how radio is made—and even to envision your own show, or just volunteer to help out. This is community radio, after all, giving regular folks access to the airwaves!

Thank you for your past and continued support. Tune in to KSKQ-LP, 94.9 FM or on the web @ www.kskq.org

Sincerely, KSKQ Permanent Steering Committee

PS: Please mail your donations and contributions to:
