Jason Houk, 09.04.2008 21:51

Southern Oregon’s fourth annual Independent Media Week will showcase a coalition of independent media producers, local activists and community groups organized around the theme that “A well-informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy”

Running April 13th - 19th, Independent Media Week is a grassroots campaign to inform and empower citizens by showcasing local efforts and to expand and inspire hyper-local media production. This year’s Independent Media Week events includes workshops, a public concert, free film festivals and a public forum and discussion.

Don't hate the media, Be the media.
Don't hate the media, Be the media.

In April 2005, the City of Ashland officially proclaimed its first Independent Media Week. with a goal to broadcast “Democracy Now” and launch KSKQ, a local low-power FM radio station. The headline speaker at the event was Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now”. Every year since a coalition of community media supporters have asked the City of Ashland to proclaim a week in April as Independent Media Week.

Once again, media activists and community volunteers are organizing the week’s activities, and are inviting participation and attendance from all interested citizens and organizations. This year groups will be hosting independent media workshops, forums, films and performances including unplugged acoustic entertainment from local independent performers and student musicians.

On Sunday, April 13, KSKQ Community Studio will host a pair of media workshops. From 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm, How to Make Radio Happen - Meet current KSKQ producers and staff and learn how to produce your own radio programs. From 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm, Citizen Journalism - How to use and post to the Rogue Independent Media Center. The KSKQ Studio is located at 330 E. Hersey St. #2 in Ashland Oregon.

On Monday, April 14, at 6 PM, Peace House will host a Press Conference to kick-off Independent Media Week. Invited guests include Ashland Mayor John Morrison, Oregon State Representative Peter Buckley and Local Celebrity Jeff Golden. Independent Media Week will bring awareness to the fact that a free press is the cornerstone of democracy and an unrestrained press provides greater access to information and dissenting viewpoints. Come and show your support for the need for a more independent media.

Peace House will also screen Sir, No Sir starting at 7:00 pm. Sir! No Sir! tells the long suppressed story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam. This is the story of one of the most vibrant and widespread upheavals of the 1960’s- one that had a profound impact on American society yet has been virtually obliterated from the collective memory of that time. Peace House is located at 543 S. Mountain Ave. in Ashland Oregon.

On Tuesday April 15, the Southern Oregon Media Collective will screen Leaves of Green and Weed. These films will show from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Southern Oregon University, Meese Auditorium, Center for the Visual Arts

Leaves of Green is a must for anyone who is interested in both marijuana's legal and ilegal useage. This 60-minute documentary is an investigative report on the world’s most controversial plant. From Reefer Madness to Cheech and Chong we’ve come a long way. Watch as the cameras explore industrial hemp and the world of medical marijuana. Through the eyes of the coordinator of the Kentucky hemp growers co-operative, we learn where it started and where it’s all going.

The documentary Weed offers highlights from Amsterdam’s eighth annual five-day-long Cannabis Cup & Hemp Expo. Told in a relatively straightforward manner it follows a group of largely American judges as they visit some of the liberal Dutch city’s various marijuana and hash houses to sample assorted THC containing products in a wide variety of environments. Also covered are snippets of recreational events, many of which are humorous, and educational seminars covering the more serious, non-drug related benefits offered by the versatile hemp plant.

On Wednesday, April 16th, the Womens Resource Center of Southern Oregon will present Killing Us Softly 3, a film about the portrayals and betrayals of women by mainstream media. The film will be shown from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at Southern Oregon University, Meese Auditorium, Center for the Visual Arts.

In Killing Us Softly 3 Jean Kilbourne surveys the contemporary advertising landscape to critically examine how, why and to what effect corporations and their advertisers use images of girls and women to sell their products. She sets mass media images of femininity against social reality, advertising fantasy against the actual experience of girls and women, and encourages us to consider the relationship between the stories advertising tells about girls and women and the actual lives girls and women lead.

On Thursday, April 17th at 6:30 PM Citizens for Peace and Justice presents Media and the War, a Readers' Conversation and Film (snacks, too!) to be held at the Medford Congregational United Church,Lidgate Hall 1801 E. Jackson Street – Medford Oregon.

City of Ashland Proclamation: Independent Media Week - 2008
10.04.2008 - 22:25
- - - - - INDEPENDENT MEDIA WEEK - - - - -

* An informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy.

* An informed citizenry depends on unrestrained press, which provides greater access to information, more points of view and greater diversity of thought and fact.

* The trend toward the consolidation of media ownership has resulted in journalistic practices that hinder public awareness by excluding or marginalizing minority and dissenting viewpoints.

* Fewer media voices can result in homogenized messaging and the silencing of many points of view.

* Democratic principles support the case for more independent media in this country, not less.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, John W. Morrison, Mayor of Ashland, do hereby proclaim the week of April 13 - 19 2008 as INDEPENDENT MEDIA WEEK and encourage all citizens to seek out and explore the rich diversity of independent media available within, and to our community.
