THE JEFFERSON CENTER PRESENTS AN EVENING OF TUNES 'N 'TOONS ON THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE
Steve Benson, 1993 Pulitzer Prize-winning daily editorial cartoonist for the (Phoenix) Arizona Republic, and Dan Barker, co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, will headline The Jefferson Center’s Spring Lecture program at 7:30 pm April 26th in the Rogue River Room, Stevenson Union, Southern Oregon University. They call their presentation Tunes 'n 'Toons, a lighthearted look at the contemporary American religion scene in this election year, with special emphasis on the subject of the separation of Church and State. Admission $10 (Students $5 with ID)
Benson, a former Mormon, is the grandson of the late Ezra Taft Benson, once president of the Church of the Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). Steve Benson has distinguished himself by his daily editorial cartoons, mostly political, which have been printed and displayed around the world. He is an entertaining speaker and cartoonist, often bringing his audiences to gales of laughter. Benson has become an outspoken speaker, who has teamed up with Dan Barker to present a humorous look at religion in the news with their unique music and cartoon comedy revue. In 2002, Benson was presented the Emperor Has No Clothes Award by the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
Barker, a teenage evangelist at age 15, served as a Protestant missionary and maintained a touring musical ministry for seventeen years. An accomplished pianist, record producer, arranger and songwriter, he worked mainly with Christian music companies. After five years of study, Barker announced in 1984 that he had left religion. Shortly thereafter, his autobiographical story of de-conversion and critical analysis of Christianity, Losing Faith in Faith: >From Preacher to Atheist was published. Barker has appeared on TV talk shows, including twice with Oprah Winfrey, in addition to ABC’s “Good Morning America,” “Religion and Ethics News Weekly” on PBS, on Fox News, and Court TV.

Dr. Dan Garvey, President of Prescott College, presents a thoughtful approach to important questions for our future leaders in his presentation entitled Turning Point: The Next Generation. This is the second topic and second year for the national Imagine: Sustainable Futures Dialogues.
All events are free of charge and begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. After the lecture, Dr. Garvey will mediate an open discussion about the opportunities available for citizens and leaders to imagine and create the future we would like to live in, both in our personal lives and for the public good.
Dr. Garvey’s approach is rooted in the belief common within experiential education that all members of society, from students to public leaders, are resources for social transformation. “Prescott College has always challenged our students and faculty to think confidently and creatively about what it is we can do to make the world a better place,” he explains. “Our students leave here with a solid grasp of the creative thinking and collaborative, practical action needed to make positive, lasting change. I hope the Dialogues will be a forum through which many others can come together to think collaboratively about solutions, and to find the hope and encouragement we all need in difficult times.”

We plan and learn as we go. The Elder/Youth Conference is set for June 20-23, tentatively (and most likely) at EarthTeach Forest Park again this year. Since this is a 4 day event, it is BIG and quite involved. We can use ALL the help you are willing to give. The crafting we'll be doing at weekly meetings will be part of a big Giveaway to elders, youth and special helpers at this conference. 20-Fire Ecology and Management Field Trip to a Burned Forest along the Klamath Sat, April 12th - 11am rendezvous in Happy Camp
The Happy Camp Ranger District of the Klamath National Forest boasts some of the most spectacular backcountry recreation on Earth. Located along the Klamath River near the renowned Marble Mountain and High Siskiyou Wilderness Areas, Happy Camp more than lives up to its name. The mixed conifer old-growth forests that grow around Happy Camp have evolved with fire for centuries. Prior to Smokey the Bear’s anti-fire propaganda, local Native American tribes would ignite fires in these mountains to ensure the benefits to forest health and species diversity that fire encouraged.
Following the 2007 lightning-ignited fires in northern California, the Forest Service immediately started planning “salvage” timber sales on steep slopes located above salmon-bearing streams in the Little Grider and Independence watersheds. The healthy forests proposed for logging in the Happy Camp salvage sales are easily accessible from the Forest Service road system, and are nearby spectacular wilderness and river hiking opportunities. Join KS Wild, EPIC, Klamath Forest Alliance and Cascadia Wildlands Project for a hike into the burn and proposed logging units.
Field trip meets at 11am in the parking lot of Indian Creek River Access on Highway 96 (from I-5, drive east and then south on Highway 96 until you reach Happy Camp. The parking lot is on the south end of town, just past the Indian Creek Bridge, you will see bathrooms).
