KSKQ This Week #80 04-03-08 Special Letter + 20 csa's in this issue & more!

PLEASE NOTE! We had network issues last night. So I have to put off editing the newsletter until tonight. Thanks for understanding.

Special Letter to our members and supporters of KSKQ.

Dear Community Radio Supporters!

KSKQ-LP, 94.9 FM, is very pleased to announce that we are broadcasting over the air at last! Right now if you live in the southern part of Ashland, you should be hearing us loud and clear. We still have a few technical and FCC challenges to overcome in order to expand the signal, but weve got our engineers working on that and expect the issues to be resolved this Saturday.
In order to reach all of Ashland and beyond, we need your financial support.

In the last six months, we also applied for a full-power non-commercial educational license and we have doubled the number of producers who broadcast regular LIVE on-air programming at the station. Take a look at our website, www.kskq.org, for our weekly schedule. View a full description of our daily programming and listen to us live via the internet. Did you know that we've been streaming our radio content over the internet continually for the last three years? Were very proud of that accomplishment!

We must be able to reach all of Ashland over the airwaves before we can campaign for business underwriters; therefore financial support from people like you, who have donated in the past, is very important. We recently mailed out this letter, with our first printed monthly schedule and donations are starting to trickle in. Also in this letter was enclosed, an envelope that outlines several donation options. All contributions are tax-deductible through our parent organization, the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon,

 http://www.mcaso.org
a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We also offer underwriting opportunities for your business on our website and in our weekly electronic newsletter, KSKQ This Week, which goes out to over 800 local people, and is marketed to 5000 possible readers.

We encourage you to come down to the station at 330 E. Hersey #2, in Ashland, to see how radio is made and even to envision your own show, or just volunteer to help out. This is community radio, after all, giving regular folks access to the airwaves!

Thank you for your past and continued support. Tune in to KSKQ-LP, 94.9 FM or on the web @ www.kskq.org

Sincerely, KSKQ Permanent Steering Committee

PS: Please mail your donations and contributions to:

Free Film Screening: Sir No Sir! - The Suppressed Story of the GI Movement to End the War in Vietnam. April 14th 6pm, @ Peace House Indi-Media Week EVENT!
11-FREE FILM SCREENING: Sir! No Sir! The Suppressed Story of the GI Movement to End the War in Vietnam

Monday, April 14th 6pm Independent Media Week 2008 Press conference 7pm - Film Peace House (543 S. Mountain; Ashland)

In the 1960's an anti-war movement emerged that altered the course of history. This movement didn't take place on college campuses, but in barracks and on aircraft carriers. It flourished in army stockades, navy brigs and in the dingy towns that surround military bases. It penetrated elite military colleges like West Point. And it spread throughout the battlefields of Vietnam. It was a movement no one expected, least of all those in it. Hundreds went to prison and thousands into exile. And by 1971 it had, in the words of one colonel, infested the entire armed services. Yet today few people know about the GI movement against the war in Vietnam. With hundreds of thousands of American GIs once again occupying countries on the other side of the world, these history-changing events have been erased from America's public memory.
SIR! NO SIR is a film that challenges deeply-held beliefs not just about the Vietnam War and those who fought it, but about the world we live in today. It is a vivid portrayal of William Faulkner's famous observation that "The past isn't dead; it isn't even past."

Sponsored by Peace House and Independent Media Week 2008.

Sunday 2pm-4pm First Nations Radio: Dan Wahpehpah, Jaimie Wheeler, and Jane Ayers hosts. Our focus is to bring you Native music (traditional and current), information and education on issues revolving around indigenous rights, sovereignty, land use struggles for Native people, environmental issues affecting local tribes, cultural restoration and preservation, information on our local grassroots organization, Red Earth Descendants (RED) and the events RED sponsors in our community.

First Nations Radio on KSKQ allows us to share our goals and vision as intertribal people with the ultimate vision of helping to create a healthy community and environment for the next Seven Generations of life.

Greetings R.E.D. Community and Friends, We will begin having our weekly business/crafting meetings at Michael's house for this coming season (2165 Hwy. 99, Ashland--"next door" to the Jackson Wellsprings) so that we can better facilitate the crafting we plan to do for our Elder Honoring Giveaway at our next event, the Elder/Youth Conference in June.

Meetings will continue to take place on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.. We plan to combine organizational business with the making of Giveaway items. No crafting experience necessary! We plan and learn as we go. The Elder/Youth Conference is set for June 20-23, tentatively (and most likely) at EarthTeach Forest Park again this year. Since this is a 4 day event, it is BIG and quite involved. We can use ALL the help you are willing to give. The crafting we'll be doing at weekly meetings will be part of a big Giveaway to elders, youth and special helpers at this conference. In the tradition of Giveaway, we cherish this process of making things for the People. It is a big honor.

Thank you for being part of this community. Blessings, Jaimie

20-Fire Ecology and Management Field Trip to a Burned Forest along the Klamath Sat, April 12th - 11am rendezvous in Happy Camp

The Happy Camp Ranger District of the Klamath National Forest boasts some of the most spectacular backcountry recreation on Earth. Located along the Klamath River near the renowned Marble Mountain and High Siskiyou Wilderness Areas, Happy Camp more than lives up to its name. The mixed conifer old-growth forests that grow around Happy Camp have evolved with fire for centuries. Prior to Smokey the Bears anti-fire propaganda, local Native American tribes would ignite fires in these mountains to ensure the benefits to forest health and species diversity that fire encouraged.

Following the 2007 lightning-ignited fires in northern California, the Forest Service immediately started planning salvage timber sales on steep slopes located above salmon-bearing streams in the Little Grider and Independence watersheds. The healthy forests proposed for logging in the Happy Camp salvage sales are easily accessible from the Forest Service road system, and are nearby spectacular wilderness and river hiking opportunities. Join KS Wild, EPIC, Klamath Forest Alliance and Cascadia Wildlands Project for a hike into the burn and proposed logging units.

Field trip meets at 11am in the parking lot of Indian Creek River Access on Highway 96 (from I-5, drive east and then south on Highway 96 until you reach Happy Camp. The parking lot is on the south end of town, just past the Indian Creek Bridge, you will see bathrooms).
