-Citizens for Peace & Justice events: For Feb & March
Many of you are new additions to this group email that I send out only a few times a month to alert progressive folks in the Rogue Valley about events and issues of much importance (we think) to you all. I hope you'll want to remain on this list (it's not a "listserv," just my own email group), but if you want off, hit Reply and tell me so.
Below are three events that CPJ is planning over the next couple of months that we hope you will attend; find out more at
http://www.medfordcpj.org :
The "5 Years Is 5 Too Many" Rally & March to mark the 5th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq will be held from 11 am to 1 pm Saturday, March 15th, at Alba Park in Medford. We'll rally around the gazebo, be inspired by some brief speeches and live music and then we'll march through downtown Medford and back to Alba Park for more music and speeches. Last March more than 300 of you participated in our "Books Not Bombs" rally and march and the Peace Forum that followed at the Medford Library just before its closure. We hope all of you will join us on March 15th to show the valley that we still oppose this illegal war and want our troops home NOW!
The 4,000 US soldiers Have Died rally. To date there have been 3,941 US soldier who have died in Iraq. (Yes, I know the total would be much higher if those who died later in the US of their injuries or illnesses were added to the total. And yes, I know that the number of Iraqis who have died probably exceeds 1 million though nobody can know for sure.) We are planning to rally in the small parking lot at the Rogue Valley Mall at 1 pm on the Saturday following the death of the 4,000th. There will be live music and speeches and then we'll march around the perimeter of the mall, just as we did on January 9th, 2007, after the 3,000th US soldier died in Iraq. We'll let you know when we are getting close to the time for this march. US deaths have been averaging about 33 a month for the past three or four months. It may be that the 4,000th death may happen about the time that our 5th anniversary rally is planned, in which case we'll have one big event, instead of two.
Please let me know if you have questions or want to help with the planning and organization of one or more of these events. We'll have a planning session at 1 pm Saturday, Feb. 16th, at the Jackson County Democratic Office in Medford.
Yours for peace & justice, Allen Hallmark 855-2312

-BBC: West Park Pictures Seeks local opinions and efforts with the battle to protect Nat. Forest in Oregon
I have been trying to get hold of the Oxygen Collective specifically but still no joy. Perhaps you may be interested in participating? Or perhaps you could help pass me in to someone with the Oxygen Collective?
We are currently producing a documentary for the BBC, presented by Stephen Fry, a well respected British actor. He will be visiting all 50 states in America in a London taxi, en route meeting people from the iconic to the everyday. He will visit a couple of places in each state hoping to get and ideas of what the state is known for, to get involved in local industry or events and spend time with the people born and bred there. We have finished filming the first program on the East Coast where Stephen helped out on a Lobster boat in Maine, joined the crew of an America's Cup boat in Rhode Island and explored a submarine in Groton, Connecticut. Our camera crew have just begun travelling through the Midwest, starting out at Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans this week - and possibly now facing the tornadoes of the southern states!
We are very much looking forward to filming the epic west coast film, with arrival in Oregon on or around 20th April, and would love to include a story of the ongoing battle to protect the Siskiyou National Forest in Oregon. We do not want this to be a 'talking heads' program nor a tourist/travel piece so are looking for ways in which our intelligent and naturally curious presenter Stephen Fry can interact with whatever he is learning about. It would be fantastic to accompany you and to be involved in some activism, to see you staging protests up in trees, tackling the loggers head-on, and also to hear of your great respect for your amazing countryside. We are a small documentary crew, simply Presenter, Camera, Sound and Director, and so we can hopefully fit in with your schedule and commitments.
If this is something you might be interested in or you know of someone who might be, do please email me or send me a number/time that would be best to contact you on and we could talk through options, ideas and dates. Filming is proposed to take place on or around 21st April (tbc) but I will also be visiting the area first to meet all contributors around 22-23 February. I realise there may still be plenty of snow coverage around then and will come prepared! Please do let me know if I can provide you will any more information, I would love you to be involved!

-Weekly Radio Spin available for download: Stories behind the news, Media Manipulators, How Gov & Corp. PR shape media coverage...
Dear friends at KSKQ,
I'm writing to introduce you to our weekly five minute audio report, the "Weekly Radio Spin." I hope that your station might be interested in airing it. You can listen to past shows on our website, at:
http://www.prwatch.org/audio
The Weekly Radio Spin is a look at the stories behind the news -- how PR campaigns by companies and government agencies shape media coverage on a wide range of issues, including the Iraq War, drug safety and the environment. The segment also has a recurring feature titled "Six Degrees of Spin and Fakin'," where we look at the connections between media manipulators. Descriptions of our past segments can be found at:
http://www.prwatch.org/taxonomy/term/247
The Weekly Radio Spin is uploaded each Friday (no later than 4 pm eastern time), and is already aired by several Pacifica Network affiliates around the country. It's made freely available by the Center for Media and Democracy, an award-winning media and public relations watchdog group founded by John Stauber, the co-author of the books "Toxic Sludge Is Good for You!" and "Weapons of Mass Deception."
Feel free to email or call (608-260-9713) me if you have any questions.
