CPJ Iraq War Events
Citizens for Peace & Justice, 08.02.2008 08:01
Five years of this senseless war. Who would believe it? Let's take advantage of this political season to high profile what's really going on.
Join us in Medford, Saturday February 9 at 6 PM, as we support the work of The Collateral Repair Project (CRP). The potluck is free and donations will go to CRP.
Citizens for Peace & Justice is a Medford based peace group that formed in March 2003 and has rallied on a monthly basis on countless Saturdays since May 2004.
Below are three events that CPJ is planning over the next couple of months that we hope you will attend.
1. Collateral Repair Project, free dinner and the most intensive report yet from Mary Madsen and Sasha Crow, co-directors of the Collateral Repair Project, about their trips to Jordan to work with Iraqi refugees. A buffet-style dinner will be provided by CPJ members at 6 pm Saturday, Feb. 9th, in Lidgate Hall at the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Jackson St. Then, Mary & Sasha will present an enhanced PowerPoint presentation, including many photos and video footage, of their work with the Iraqi refugees in Amman, Jordan. All donations will go to the Collateral Repair Project.
2. The "5 Years Is 5 Too Many" Rally & March to mark the 5th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq will be held from 11 am to 1 pm Saturday, March 15th, at Alba Park in Medford. We'll rally around the gazebo, be inspired by some brief speeches and live music and then we'll march through downtown Medford and back to Alba Park for more music and speeches. Last March more than 300 of you participated in our "Books Not Bombs" rally and march and the Peace Forum that followed at the Medford Library just before its closure. We hope all of you will join us on March 15th to show the valley that we still oppose this illegal war and want our troops home NOW!
3. The 4,000 US soldiers Have Died rally. To date there have been 3,941 US soldier who have died in Iraq. (Yes, I know the total would be much higher if those who died later in the US of their injuries or illnesses were added to the total. And yes, I know that the number of Iraqis who have died probably exceeds 1 million though nobody can know for sure.) We are planning to rally in the small parking lot at the Rogue Valley Mall at 1 pm on the Saturday following the death of the 4,000th. There will be live music and speeches and then we'll march around the perimeter of the mall, just as we did on January 9th, 2007, after the 3,000th US soldier died in Iraq. We'll let you know when we are getting close to the time for this march. US deaths have been averaging about 33 a month for the past three or four months. It may be that the 4,000th death may happen about the time that our 5th anniversary rally is planned, in which case we'll have one big event, instead of two.
We'll have a planning session at 1 pm Saturday, Feb. 16th, at the Jackson County Democratic Office in Medford.
