Citizens for Peace & Justice of Medford in conjunction with the Stop Gordon Smith Campaign of the Democratic Party of Oregon urges the peace- and truth-loving citizens of the Rogue Valley to join in protesting Sen. Gordon Smith's appearance in Medford tomorrow (Wednesday, Jan. 16th).
Smith, a Republican corporate mogul from Pendleton and U.S. senator, will be presenting a large check to city of Medford officials in a ceremony at 2 pm Wednesday at the Santo Center, 701 N. Columbus Ave. CPJ and the Stop Gordon Smith Campaign have no problem with the city receiving federal money for the Santo community center and its programs. In fact, we want cities, counties and states to receive much more money for local programs from the federal government, which is not currently available due to huge spending on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and preparations for a possible war in Iran.
CPJ will be protesting the fact that Gordon Smith is the "Say Anything to Get Elected" senator and an embarrassment to the state of Oregon. It has become increasingly clear that no one should believe much of anything that Smith says about his service in Washington. Below is information about Smith's words vs. his voting record:
In December 2006 after Democrats won a big victory at the polls and the Iraq War was very unpopular with voters, Smith made a big speech and said he could no longer support the war and that it might even be criminal. Last month, for the fifth time in 2007, Gordon Smith voted to keep troops in Iraq.
His Tuesday, December 18 vote followed his two votes in Fall and two in May to keep troops in Iraq. Oregon's other U.S. Senator, Ron Wyden, voted opposite Smith on all five votes.
Smith's votes to keep troops in Iraq come despite his year long public claim that he opposes the war. It's no surprise Smith isn't following through on his words. Smith has proven he will say anything to win re-elected.
