-building community, one idea at a time….by Marvin and…
One of the most integral aspects of a community--the most, some would say--is taking care of our basics: Water, food, clothing, shelter. One of the things I hear so much about Ashland is that one of the largest basics, housing, is not taken care of for most people, especially younger, less financially established people. I've heard many treat the topic philosophically, as just a rite of passage, but the fact remains that many talented artists, healers, musicians, creators are forced to leave Ashland for cheaper climates.

I'd like to see that change. There's no reason why the vibrant community that drew most of us here should be pushed out by the rising cost of housing (and to give you an idea, I can make the same or better salary and pay 1/2 to 2/3 what I do here, several other places I've visited).

My proposal/request:
I'd like to start a community modeled after the Emma Goldman Finishing School in Seattle ( http://www.egfs.org) An egalitarian community, equal value is given to housecleaning, gardening, time spent with children, and money-earning activities. People there are expected to contribute 25 hours per week to the community in one form or another, and in exchange have their own room, communal meals, and a huge shared living space, as well as a community of people with whom to share it. What I need to do that here, of course, is a space. It might be someone's second home that they spend only a few weeks a year in; it might be an extra property the owner doesn't know what to do with in the deflating housing market; there might be some people out there who want to donate money towards the purchase of such a place. It would have to be large, or have land on which to expand, to build more living quarters with natural local materials. We'd want to have large gardens, fruit trees, a composting toilet, living grey water system, and other energy-reducing adaptations, which we would build ourselves (adding value to the property, if it is, in fact a donation-lease situation).

Any suggestions? Comments? Offers? I'm sowing the seeds so that, come spring, we can grow something completely new in this town.

Editors note: to add to this wonderful idea: A concept that a few locals are involved with is called the: Pre-Cycling Collective. Where we collect, reuse, reduce, recycle useful items before they go to the dump or transfer station, we sort, inventory, fix, refurbish and offer for reasonable donations.
In my opinion, if it is manufactured it can be recycled or pre-cycled!. Everything can be recycled in quantity! All communities should have a salvage yard. All communities should have a coop shop where individuals can work on things, fix things, make things, share tools, share knowledge and expertise. We just need land, barns, workshops, storage facilities that are available without a looming pending purchase for another million dollar strip mall or faux housing development that stay empty or unavailable to locals who can not afford the lease or month to month rent. This is not sustainable! This is not just for Ashland either. This could be a model for other communities where each Pre-Cycling Center specializes in certain man-made-manufactured resources. Here are some thoughts: what could someone do with 5 tones of used chewing gum? It’s pure rubber people! What about 10 tones of rotting pears or fruit? That can be turned into some sort of fermented liquid that could be used for transportation?
What about household paint? 20 tones of old clothes, pants, jackets, sleeping bags, 13 tones of old plastic toys, 55,000 plant or flower containers, broken electrical tools that would not be cost effective to drive to Medford and pay $75 an hour for someone to order a part that costs more that what the tool is worth, but if we save the broken tool and inventory it, we will eventually receive another one that is broken and then wa la, we take two broken ones and make one working one, and save the unused parts for future fixes.…what a concept.….Mmmmmmmm…Is this getting your creative juices flowing? Does it really get recycled or just collected and moved to another undisclosed location. Out of sight out of mind. Right? Let’s turn in our own junk into our own resources!

[ashland-community-action] Speak up on the BLM's Whopper - Comments due 1/11
The BLM is accepting public comments through January 11, 2008 on a management plan that will affect 2.5 million acres of public forests in western Oregon, possibly for decades to come.

These forests, administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), include streams and rivers that produce clean water and salmon, recreation areas, scenic vistas, and some of America’s last remaining ancient forests. Many of us raise our families and own property either near or adjacent to BLM lands, and we have an enormous stake in how these lands are managed.

Please visit  http://www.oregonheritageforests.org for more information, talking points and a sample letter. Addresses for the BLM and elected officials are at the bottom of this email. Thank you very much for your attention to this important matter. Please ask your friends and neighbors to submit comments as well.

-NW Regional Meeting to Support Troop GI War Resisters, JANUARY 20 in Tacoma

Dear Fellow Veterans and Activists, Happy New Year of Resistance to War!

Thanks again to all of you who participated in the October 28 regional meeting in Carnation, Washington, organized by the War Resister Support Action Team of Veterans For Peace, chapter 92. The GI Outreach breakout group decided then to have a follow-up meeting. That meeting will be in Tacoma on Sunday, March 20, 1 pm – 4 pm.

Since the Carnation meeting a little over two months ago, there have been several promising new developments. Iraq Veterans Against the War are planning an intensive outreach effort to GI’s at Fort Lewis, Feb. 18-24. And several veterans and activists have been planning a pirate radio station and website for GI’s at Fort Lewis and nearby McChord Air Force Base.

Please join us in Tacoma on Sunday, January 20. The meeting will begin at 1 pm and end by 4 pm. It will be held at the Unitarian Congregation Church at 1115 S.56th (see below for directions).

The following day, Monday, January 21, is the Martin Luther King holiday. Members of Veterans For Peace and Iraq Veterans Against the War will be marching in Seattle, along with supporters of Lt. Ehren Watada, whose struggle continues. Despite a Federal Court ruling barring the Army brass from court-martialing him a second time (“double jeopardy”), he remains in a legal/political limbo and needs our support.

U.S. war resisters in Canada suffered a setback in November when the Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear appeals of their wrongful denial of refugee status. But they bounced back in December when a key Parliamentary committee voted on a motion to grant them sanctuary in Canada and to halt any deportation proceedings. The opposition parties on the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration united to outvote the Conservatives 7-4. It is hoped that the full House of Commons will vote similarly when they reconvene in February.

In the meantime, several of the AWOL GI’s, including Jeremy Hinzman, the first war resister to seek refugee status in Canada, are facing the possibility of deportation. So the War Resisters Support Campaign has called for a pan-Canadian day of action on Saturday, January 26. In solidarity, Courage To Resist is coordinating national days of action in the U.S. on Jan. 25-26, including delegations and vigils at the Canadian Embassy in Washington and Canadian Consulates in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Anyone want to join us? For more information, go to www.couragetoresist.org and contact me at  projectsafehaven@hotmail.com.

Many of these various efforts will converge in Washington, DC in mid-March, the fifth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Iraq Veterans Against the War is organizing a Winter Soldier Investigation, March 14-16. Veterans of the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with citizens of both countries, will give public testimony about U.S. war crimes. Iraq veterans seeking sanctuary in Canada will testify remotely, and it is hoped that there will be real time video broadcast of this testimony and support actions around the U.S. For more information, go to www.ivaw.org.

So there is a LOT going on. The antiwar movement, led by Iraq vets, will be sharper and more energized than we have seen it in a while. We all have the opportunity to be part of building up this movement toward finally bringing an end to the U.S. wars on the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.

The primary focus of our 3-hour meeting in Tacoma will be how we can best support the Iraq vets in their efforts to reach out to GI’s at Fort Lewis. But there will also be time on the agenda for updates and proposals for actions in support of Lt. Ehren Watada and our war resisters in Canada. Suggestions for other agenda items are welcome. Please let us know if you are planning to attend.

Directions to the meeting on Sunday, January 20, 1pm – 4pm: Unitarian Congregation Church at 1115 S.56th in south Tacoma. It is on the corner of "L" street. It is very easy to get to from I-5 going either direction. Just take the 56th St exit and go East. The church will be down a couple lights on your left and there is ample parking.

We hope to see you there. We apologize for the relatively short notice. If you are unable to make it, please feel free to contact me for more information about these activities.

Keep on keepin' on! for peace and justice, Gerry Condon (206) 499-1220

-O Little Town in Oregon By Kelpie Wilson | t r u t h o u t | Perspective, Shockers…

Tuesday 01 January 2008 A recent edition of the local paper in my little Oregon town contained some real shockers. First came the news that our former mayor had been murdered by a young man he had once sheltered. The 19-year-old, likely a schizophrenic, had allegedly thrown the 70-year-old man to the ground and repeatedly pounded his head on the pavement. Friends say the mayor, fearful of the young man's violence, had phoned the police earlier, but got the usual response people get in this impoverished rural county: "Sorry, we don't have the manpower to answer your call." The next disturbing news came, in of all things, the five-page spread of children's letters to Santa. Many of these letters were intensely heartwarming, funny or even irritating in the way that children have. I had to roll my eyes at the long lists of brand name toys desired by children, including one child ready with the helpful hint, "Santa, you can get this at Wal Mart."
