Ashland Daily Tidings Supports Racism & Hate!

MEDIA WATCH DAWG, 04.12.2007 15:46

Rupert Murdoch owned rag goes over the line- Ashland, Oregon's local newspaper supports racism and hate speech. Editor Scot Bolsinger is shameless yet has personal responsibility for the horrible hate which is harbored by this poor example of so-called journalism. The Tidings has stooped to a new low. The paper has been spiraling downward ever since combining with the only other daily paper in the Rogue Valley, the Medford Mail Tribune. How do you say monopoly? Lack of real news has been replaced with this disgusting cesspool of hate.

Look Hate in the face and see what you think. Examples follow...

Following was sent to the Ashland Daily Tidings' Editor Scot Bolsinger-

Editor Bolsinger:

PETE SEDA COMMENTS ON THE DAILY TIDINGS' WEB SIGHT ARE OVER THE LINE. CEASE & DESIST NOW!!!

I see what you are supporting on your web site. Several of the comments about Pete Seda may actually go over the legal line and violate Federal Law. That is for a lawyer to determine, but even if not your company's support of racism is ethically and morally one sick example of hate speech. If not illegal this is at the very least a terrifying example of pure hatred and it needs to stop immediately. You are harboring racists and in so doing you have personal responsibility as the newspaper editor of a racist organization... This has nothing to do with the first amendment, Scot Bolsinger, but everything to do with stooping to a new low with your sick newspaper.

Tidings is a mixed bag

I am doubtful about trying to stopping hate speech this way. Bolsinger, the editor, does have responsibility but do you know he is "shameless" and if he's calling the shots?

Great idea to ask Tidings to clean up that website.

I disagree
05.12.2007 - 19:38
After reading the comments on the Tidings website, I disagreed with your strategy for dealing with them. I understood those people's pain and despair at the thought of a terrorist coming to live nearby. I don't think that blocking their voices would be helpful. I appreciate that they took time to share their perspective, and I think we should honor that with our thoughtful and caring replies to them. So I did. I think instead of encouraging the Tidings to silence those who are upset or "full of hate", we should be thankful they are providing us with an opportunity to hear and respond to them. If we can let them know that we understand their perspective on terrorism, and then let them know how we view the situation with Seda, that may do more to heal our community than blocking them out.

"Fear Politics" is the driver for Racism
06.12.2007 - 09:26
Eli comments: "I understood those people's pain and despair at the thought of a terrorist coming to live nearby"

Eli, do not get carried away with passionate listening... The racist comments harbored on the Ashland Daily Tidings' web site are the result of Fear Politics that are ever increasing in the United States and they are brought to us by a radical right that clearly understands how to divide and control a populace.

The word "terrorist" is grossly overused and its meaning has been morphed to now include people who are critical of the Bush Administration. "You are either with us or against us", remember that?

Pete Seda is innocent until proven guilty. Pete Seda is NOT a terrorist and anybody who says so is succumbing to the hideous politics of fear.

Stand up against Racism. There is no place for passionate listening when it comes to the politics of hate brought to us by the politics of fear. Join me and tell the Ashland Daily Tidings their harboring of racism is unacceptable and must go, now. Like a hot stove that burns immediately there is nothing better than to act clearly and quickly. Silence is NOT an option for those who practice peace and work for a just world.

Nonviolent Strategy
06.12.2007 - 11:13
Wes,
Thanks for explaining your position. I agree that the radical right is spreading fear and division on purpose in a shrewd and calculated way. I also agree with you that the local people who call Seda an terrorist are succumbing to the hideous politics of fear. In otherwords, the locals are not the same people who are doing this on purpose. The leaders try to divide on purpose, the locals are the victims of the fear assault. Think about it. They are succumbing to fear because they are already afraid. If you respond to their fear by attacking them back, then you have just validated what their leaders tell them, and achieved the division their leaders are working on.

Whether or not you believe that peaceful dialogue will be able to reach those who have written those comments, there are many others who read them and feel their fear stirred. They will also read how we respond to that fear. That is a tremendous opportunity for us that is rarely found in our society. I think it is critical that we not buy into the "us vs them" division that their leaders are working towards. Therefore it’s critical that we respond to local citizens with compassion and understanding as we offer our point of view.

First off...
12.12.2007 - 14:01
Since when is the Ashland Daily Tidings and the Medford Mail Tribune the "only daily papers in the Rogue Valley"? Haven't you ever heard of the Daily courier?

Secondly, I highly doubt that Bolsinger has anything to do with the online website - most newspapers that have online versions of their articles have webmasters dealing with the comments and whatnots who, for the most part, do not even work at the paper. If you should blame anyone, you should blame Steve McDaniel, who is listed on the Cantacts page as the webmaster for the Tidings. He's the one truly responsible for not deleting the offensive comments. Most likely it's not because he's bigoted or racist, but just too lazy to look through every comment on the site for offensive comments.
