Can Gordon Smith Be Trusted?

One Year After Smith Said He Could No Longer Support The Iraq War And Only Days After We Learned 3,500 More Oregonians Will Head Out To Iraq, SGS Campaign Unveils New Video And Statewide Protests To Hold Smith Accountable For Saying Anything To Win Re-election.

Portland – The Stop Gordon Smith Campaign released a new video today as part of a weeklong, statewide campaign to hold U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR) accountable for his Iraq War record.

On Wednesday, Oregonians will protest outside all of Smith’s Oregon offices to highlight the fact that Smith will say anything to win re-election and that he can’t be trusted on the Iraq War.

The video and protests come one year after Smith’s speech from the floor of the U.S. Senate that he opposed the Iraq War. See the video the DPO launched at  http://www.StopGordonSmith.com

“Gordon Smith is a political opportunist who Oregonians can’t trust to stand up for Oregon when it counts,” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. “He was one of George Bush’s biggest cheerleaders. He gave him blank check after blank check for Iraq. Now that it’s election season, he wants to convince people he’s on our side. But Oregonians know better. We know the difference between an election year speech and the resolve to bring the troops home. Oregonians have a U.S. Senator they cannot trust. He will say anything to win re-election.”

Only after America kicked Republicans out of office and said no to the war did he say he would oppose it. And, although Smith claims to oppose the war, he has been “here, there, everywhere” on the war according to The Oregonian’s February 10, 2007 editorial.

In fact, in 2007, even after he said he would oppose the war, he has actually voted four times to keep troops in Iraq and prolong the conflict. It’s a conflict that will continue to haunt Oregon families. Last week, we learned thousands more Oregonians will be heading out to Iraq over the next few years.
