Peace House Movie Night Monday, November 12th Potluck – 6pm; Film – 7pm
Peace House (543 S. Mountain; Ashland, Oregon)
“The Fourth World War”
Shot on five continents over more than two years, The Fourth World War writes a new chapter in history, setting down the untold story of the citizen movements that have sprung up all over the planet. The film was produced through a global network of independent media and activist groups, offering convincing proof that the term “anti-globalization movement” is a misnomer.
It was filmed simultaneously on the front lines of conflicts in Mexico , Argentina , South Africa , Palestine , Korea , Afghanistan and Iraq , as well as during the summit meeting protests in Seattle , Genoa and Quebec City . The Fourth World War contrasts the war without end—a global conflict, one that shatters and divides—with the inspiring struggles of men and women who resist oppression, injustice and violence.

California's Prison System: Overcrowded and Ready to Collapse
November issue of In These Times.

MEDIA ALERT October 24, 2007 | For Immediate Release A Prison System on the Brink -- In the November issue of In These Times, Sasha Abramsky reveals how California, a state once “known for having one of the most progressive prison systems in the country, one that emphasized rehabilitation, drug treatment, education and alternative to incarceration,” now has a system that makes it “impossible to deliver constitutionally acceptable levels of medical and mental health care to prisoners.”
In “Prison Breakdown,” Sasha Abramsky, author of American Furies: Crime, Punishment and Vengeance in the Age of Mass Imprisonment, details the astonishingly cramped conditions of Solano Correctional Facility near San Francisco, California. Originally designed 23 years ago to house 3,610 inmates, the “institution now holds 6,111 prisoners.” Click here to read the full article.
And in “Pirates of Private Equity,” Contributing Editor Adam Doster investigates the complicated workings of private equity funds that are taking over undervalued companies in the United States and Europe. “Unlike mutual funds and other investments, private equity funds have virtually no oversight from regulators,” Doster writes.
“Takeovers can result in worker layoffs and the disbanding of labor unions, factory or office closings, and the depletion of a company’s pension and health care plans, as well as its resources for long-term research and development,” Doster writes.
Also in this issue:
* In “A Mother’s March for Justice,” Christopher Weber interviews Jena Six mother Tina Jones about her fight for her son Bryant Purvis’ freedom. Jones discusses the online movement that has drawn unexpected national attention to the matter and reflects upon the effect of her son’s charges on her and her family. Click here to read the full article.
* Assistant Editor Jacob Wheeler investigates Guatemala’s controversial adoption industry in “Banana Republic to Baby Republic.” Wheeler writes, “Guatemala is the only Latin American country that doesn’t exercise stringent state control over international adoption.”
* And in “Harry Potter and the Muggle Activist Alliance,” Harry Potter Alliance founder Andrew Slack discusses how the international organization “uses online social networks to mobilize thousands of Harry Potter fans on social justice issues,” such as “educating and mobilizing our members around the genocide in Darfur.”
In These Times is celebrating 30 years of progressive, thought-provoking reporting and political analysis. To interview Editor Joel Bleifuss about this milestone, contact Erin Polgreen. Associate Publisher | Marketing, Advertising and Outreach

RED / NASU Native Film Fest Nov 5, 12, 19, & 26 5-9pm SU Basement
Red Earth Descendants (RED) and the Native American Student Union (NASU) of Southern Oregon University will host a Film Festival each Monday night in the month of November November 5, 12, 19 and 26 to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Films highlighting indigenous issues will be shown, as well as films directed, produced and created by Native filmmakers. Our goal is to celebrate the art of film-making by Native people and to bring awareness to issues including land use disputes on tribal lands, social/econimic problems facing the Native population and political actions by Native people to gain a voice in a country where indigenous peoples have fought genocide, poverty and continual removal from their homelands since the invasion of European people on their land. Cultural survival is still an uphill battle for many Native American tribes, and thus, the fight to bring awareness to the American public is crucial.
We invite you to view these films with us, be part of our discussion, open your heart in a way to see your home through indigenous eyes, celebrate and grow to understand our Native American heritage with local people in the community working to make change and bring awareness.
Films scheduled will include (but not necessarily be limited to) the following:
1. WATERBUSTERS, a Lakota environmental story.
2. ALCATRAZ IS NOT AN ISLAND, a story of the Alcatraz. . .
3. AS LONG AS THE RIVERS FLOW: THE GRASSY NARROWS BLOCKADE STORY, an environmental land dispute between Canadian tribal people and Weyerhaeuser logging their land.
4. POW WOW DREAMS, a fun and beautiful story of three sisters traveling the Pow Wow trail, growing up together and moving on as young women.
5. 3:52, a short film starring America Ferrerra of "Ugly Betty" and "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" as a young Native alcoholic as she takes a spiritual journey toward recovery.
6. One or two SHORT FILMS written, produced and directed by Native American film students at U.S.C..
7. A few films addressing the Klamath River salmon issues in the Klamath Basin and how the loss of salmon affect the Hoopa, Karuk, Yurok and Klamath Tribes.
And then again, we may pull out a few film surprises in the mix.
Film Festival will take place Monday nights, 5-9 p.m. in the Stevenson Union Arena (downstairs in the basement of the SU), November 5, 12, 19 and 26. We will serve popcorn and other treats and beverages.
