The event this Wednesday at the 7pm at the Belleview Grange on 1050 Tollman Creek Road (between Siskiyou and Ashland Street) there will be a presentation of the gift that Prem Rawat has to offer. His gift is free and this program is free too.

Some say that he is an expert on inner peace. I agree. I strongly feel that each person must listen to him at least once to see if this gift is for them.

For me, the gift i received from him is my highest priority in my life. He showed me how to turn my attention within. His continual inspiration has helped to keep me on this path of inner joy. A high comittment this is indeed. This is synonomous to your comittment to yourself.

Prem Rawat (aka Maharaji) absolutely loves what he does and I can see this every time I visit him. I receive him as the most honest person I have met. This makes for a good teacher.

If you are interested, come this Wednesday. You can also email me or call me for more information. You may listen to or read some of his talks at wordsofpeace.com

If you can not make this event, you may call me and I will lend you a DVD of him and, well, maybe even watch it with you if you are OK with this.

This is your big chance to see one of the heros of the 60s and 70s anti-Vietnam War era. He won't be doing his famous Woodstock cheer, but he will be singing the music of another icon of the folk music world -- Woody Guthrie.

Country Joe McDonald performs his Tribute to Woody Guthrie this Saturday, October 27 at the Unitarian Center, 4th and C Streets, Ashland. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door, $10 for teens 12-17 and, as always, free for kids under 12. Tickets are available at The Music Coop in the A Street Marketplace, on-line at  http://www.stclairevents.com or call 541-535-3562.

McDonald made the first-ever Guthrie tribute album at the height of his career as an electric rock musician, in 1969. In 2001, he wrote and first produced his "Tribute to Woody Guthrie" for the Steinbeck Center.

"McDonald knows Guthrie. In a two-act, 90-minute presentation, he weaves together Guthrie's best-loved songs and some writings from Guthrie's autobiography, his novel and his Daily Worker newspaper column. McDonald found some extraordinarily warm and witty correspondence between Guthrie and Berkeley folksinger Malvina Reynolds on the subject of chocolate chip cookies ("Cookies Talk Louder Than Words"). The piece from Guthrie's autobiography about him selling root beer during Prohibition almost sounds more like something out of Will Rogers or Mark Twain.
In a plaid shirt and bolo tie, strumming an acoustic guitar with a peace sign on it, nobody could be less affected than McDonald. He has clearly made serious study of Guthrie but presents the material with casual ease. He lays it out carefully, a deliberate cross section of material, and ties it all together, in an almost surprise ending, with a reading from his own father's autobiography.
McDonald brings the Guthrie songs to life without caricature or mimicry. Opening with "This Land Is Your Land," he not only performed Guthrie's famed Dust Bowl ballads, but he also drew from his children's songs, country songs and union songs. He brought the first half to a close with "Woman at Home," a frankly erotic set of Guthrie lyrics McDonald set to music many years ago at the invitation of the Guthrie family.
Guthrie's best songs all have a revival fervor and sing-along choruses. His populist dreams and cornpone humor mirrored the conflict of '30s Americans, facing an increasingly mechanized future and the loss of traditional values. Ironically, Guthrie's songs -- and his message -- have never gone out of style.
McDonald channels this wry, compassionate man's wisdom without ever getting in the way, a refreshingly egoless performance by someone who remains as amazed by Guthrie as anyone." Joel Selvin in the San Francisco Chronicle

-A RALLY TO CALL FOR IMPEACHMENT Oct 27 Ashland Pub Library 11am
No. It is NOT too late. October 27 is the National Mobilization to End the War in
Iraq. We the undersigned invite you to join us on that day for a
MOBILIZATION FOR IMPEACHMENT. We believe that the Republican Administration is
"royalist". It is working to dismantle our democracy by centering power in the
Executive branch. Impeachment is the tool the Constitution gave Americans to
defend its system of checks and balances against royalist aspirations of an
Executive. In his oath of office the President vowed to "preserve, protect
and defend the Constitution of the United States," In his zeal to
implement his own questionable agenda, he has manifestly violated his oath.

At 11 o'clock on October 27, everyone who shares the fear that a reckless
and ruthless administration has done vast harm to American democracy can
assemble at the Ashland Public Library and walk to the Plaza. We will stand
there lining the sidewalks and displaying our posters. We can give away
"Impeach" buttons. We can sign petitions to send to our Legislators urging
Congress to undertake Impeachment proceedings against the President and/or
the Vice President. We can stand with Women in Black at 12 o'clock.

Doing this will help heal us of a sense of powerlessness, and it will
pressure the Congress to act. The following is a short list of impeachable offenses that should be investigated by the House Judiciary Committee presided over
by Rep. John Conyers for the purpose of drawing up Articles of Impeachment.

The President and the Vice President:
* manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and the
Congress to justify the use of the United States armed forces to invade
Iraq,

* asserted presidential power to create military commissions which combine
the functions of judge, jury and prosecutor in the trial of war crimes,

* initiated kidnappings, secret detentions and torture in Eastern Europe
prisons of suspected international terrorists,

* contend that military power may be unleashed to kill or capture any
American citizen on American soil if suspected of association or affiliation
with al-Qaida,

* invoked a Presidential power to torture in contravention of federal
statutes and treaties,

* employed signing statements that defy provision of bills he has signed
into law that he proclaims are unconstitutional, for example a requirement
to obtain a judicial warrant before opening mail,

* instituted the National Security Agency's warrantless domestic
surveillance program targeting American citizens on American soil in
contravention of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978,

* evoked executive privilege to conceal from Congress secret spying programs
to gather foreign intelligence,

* flouted Congress by blocking the testimonies of Karl Rove and Harriet
Meyers regarding the firings of the U.S., Attorneys,

* assert a "Unitary Executive Theory" that gives unlimited powers to the
President,

* obstruct efforts by Congress and the Courts to review and restrict
Presidential actions.

We believe that not even ending the war in Iraq is more urgent than calling
the President and the Vice President to account. It is possible that if the
powers enumerated below were passed on to another Administration the
protections of our liberties, constructed carefully by the Founding Fathers,
will be lost forever. Impeachment is NOT, cannot be, "off the table."

Please join us on October 27.

Peace House Movie Night Monday, November 12th Potluck – 6pm; Film – 7pm
Peace House (543 S. Mountain; Ashland, Oregon)

“The Fourth World War”
Shot on five continents over more than two years, The Fourth World War writes a new chapter in history, setting down the untold story of the citizen movements that have sprung up all over the planet. The film was produced through a global network of independent media and activist groups, offering convincing proof that the term “anti-globalization movement” is a misnomer.

It was filmed simultaneously on the front lines of conflicts in Mexico , Argentina , South Africa , Palestine , Korea , Afghanistan and Iraq , as well as during the summit meeting protests in Seattle , Genoa and Quebec City . The Fourth World War contrasts the war without end—a global conflict, one that shatters and divides—with the inspiring struggles of men and women who resist oppression, injustice and violence.

HALLOWEEN IN THE ELKS DUNGEON WITH THE BAD FILM SOCIETY!

-Celebrate Halloween downstairs in the Ashland Elks’ Dungeon with The Bad Film Society on Sunday, October 28th at 6PM! POT LUCK

The demented and darkly comic feature film will be Spider Baby. Jack Hill is the director of this, and he's made a living directing very bad films like Switchblade Sisters and Foxy Brown and Coffy (even though Pam Grier was Hot!). But this is his “best” film, and it's really kind of “good” (at least compared to his other films!). It is a really creepy and surprisingly touching film about a very unique and disturbed family living in the proverbial decaying old mansion. Lon Chaney, Jr. (who sings the title song over the credits) is magnificent as the long suffering guardian of the family, who has a rare genetic malady that causes its victims to mentally regress to a condition of "pre-human savagery and cannibalism." So when the family is visited by a pair of distant relatives and their greedy lawyer, a wild night of murderous thrills ensues. After it was released (sort of) in 1964, it went into limbo, and was released over the years under several names, like Cannibal Orgy: or The Maddest Story Ever Told and Attack of The Liver Eaters. There is a rumor that a live musical version of this film is now being staged in, of all places, Brookings, Oregon!
Insanely obsessive film archivist, Steven Mayerson will screen Halloween themed rarities before the feature.

Also stay tuned for the 3rd episode of the serial The Lost Planet from 1953! On the par with an Ed Wood movie, it’s considered the worst serial ever made with unintentionally hilarious dialogue like "How are we going to find it, it's the Lost Planet." It was the last sci-fi serial ever made…for good reason.

Please bring ghoulish treat for the potluck dinner open to all members before the feature. Some bottom feeders just come for the great food! And, of course, wear a costume…or not!

Also, unload your trashy videos for door prizes in our humiliating and hilarious raffle.

Check out our website: www.badfilmsociety.org

The entrance to the Ashland Elks is on Will Dodge Way (the alley between E. Main and Lithia Way and 1st and 2nd Sts.) You'll see the "Elks Dining" sign. The private Elks parking lot will be open for use. To park, enter on 2nd St. There is a $3 donation requested to cover the costs of the room rental and supplies.

This is a unique opportunity for the public to enter the hallowed and prestigious portals of the very ritzy and exclusive Ashland Elks Lodge! (ask me how to join!)

Unscrupulously, Ed Polish
