Supporters of S-CHIP, the federal children’s health insurance program, will be holding a candlelight vigil outside of Representative Greg Walden’s office at 843 E. Main Street in Medford on Tuesday, October 16th from 6:30-7:30 to urge Congressman Walden to support the veto override vote that is currently scheduled for next week.

Supporters are urging Walden to change his position and support this essential program. They will be pointing out that his failure to do so will be sabotaging access to health care for the 117,000 Oregon children who are uninsured. Many of these children have at least one working parent but an employer who doesn’t provide or offer affordable health insurance.

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program, as passed by the House and a veto-proof majority in the Senate, would provide coverage to 3.8 million uninsured children. President Bush’s funding proposal shrinks the current program and will result in several hundred thousand children losing access to insurance. Congressman Walden is the only federal official from Oregon to vote against the program.

“We truly don’t understand what Representative Walden was thinking when he voted in the minority against the expansion of one of the government’s most successful programs,” said Kurt Kessler, the Chair the SEIU Local 503, Oregon Public Employee Union political action committee.

Beverly DeLeonardis of Oregon Action added. “It is time for Greg Walden to decide whether he is going to stand up for what’s right or stand by while sick children are abandoned.”

You really need to read this bill. I think you are over reacting because the President vetoed it.

Kids are defined up to the age of 25. Therefore, instead of an infant on a scale, but a 25 year old man on the scale.

Coverage also extends to families making up to $83k per year. Who is supposed to pay for this health care for 25 year old kids of families making $82k per year?

Janet Bauer, federal budget coordinator & policy analyst for Oregon Center for Public Policy points out that "...it’s just not the case that families can afford this on their own.” The S-CHIP program covers families that are falling thru the cracks of State and Federal programs. Every child needs and deserves healthcare.

Listen to the full interview with Bauer where she discusses the Federal S-CHIP program and options for Oregon’s uninsured, including upcoming Ballot Measure 50.
