Thanks to the Medford Congregational Church for allowing us to keep our October 13 dinner engagement with Gerry Condon, War Resister. In early summer, we booked the Medford Black Bear Diner. Two weeks ago they canceled our reservation, citing reasons of patriotism.

War Resister to Speak in Medford on October 13th

No one doubts that it takes a lot of courage to join the military and fight for one’s country in a foreign land. What is not so well known is that it takes even more courage to refuse to fight and become a conscientious objector after one joins the military and realizes that intentional killing in an unjust war is wrong.

Gerry Condon knows what it feels like to be confronted by the choice of following his conscience or ignoring it and going to war. In 1969 Condon deserted from the U.S. Army rather than be shipped to Vietnam to fight. He lived for three years in Sweden and three more in Canada, where he organized for amnesty for U.S. war resisters, which was eventually granted by Congress.

For the past three years, Condon has been working with another generation of American youth who are fleeing an unjust war and seeking sanctuary in Canada. He is director of Project Safe Haven and he maintains a blog at www.SoldierSayNo.blogspot.com.

On Saturday, Oct. 13, at 6 pm, Condon will be speaking and showing his film, Breaking Ranks, about four young U.S. soldiers who fled to Canada rather than fight in the Iraq War. Sponsored by Citizens for Peace & Justice, the program will be held in Lidgate Hall behind the Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Jackson St. The public is invited to attend this free film and lecture. Members will serve a light dinner. All donations will benefit Condon’s work with Project Safe Haven.

Many kinds of heros deserve our thanks 05.10.2007 - 13:33 Isn't war grand? Absolute and permanent, its damage, death, pain and suffering, and after effects so pervasive and ponderous can never really be undone or repaired. Everyone involved, whether they're "safe" in far off lands, immediate victims of limb-severing bombs, or long term sufferers of atomic weapons such as U.S. depleted uranium used pervasively in Iraq, is altered forever by war. Well thank God for the guys in the trenches like GERRY CONDON, ALLEN HALLMARK, AND WES BRAIN, all of whom were discussing on the Brain Labor Report this morning the soldiers who fulfill their military contracts by deciding the US Constitution to which they swear their oath prohibits them from killing in this pre-emptive war of occupation against the people and the land of Iraq. "Last resort" is a term that should NEVER be separated from war. Tragically, it was the first response from Mr. Bush, who knows in his ultra-insulated world nothing but fear, hatred, treason and cowardice.
