AND NOW THE NEWS…

WE’RE CALLING ALL PRODUCERS about two important KSKQ events, and we wanted to give you a call personally and get in touch with you.

FIRST, KSKQ is going to be having a presence at Peace Village Festival this Saturday and Sunday, and there is both a need and an Opportunity for interested producers to get some air-time and exposure for some news reporting, and this will also be a tremendous help to KSKQ. We’ve sent out many notices about it –it’s going to be from 11AM to 11PM on Saturday and Sunday, at Jackson Wellsprings. KSKQ will have a booth at the event on both days. We need people to man the booth. We’ll be
conducting “live” and recorded interviews at the event and we’re looking for producers who would be willing to do some reporting --or, to be in the studio to take call-ins via cell-phone and broadcast live interviews on the air. We will also be doing recorded interviews at the event, where no producer can be in the studio or when no cell phone is available. We need producers who are interested in doing recorded interviews of people attending and participating in Peace Village Festival.

So, we’re looking for volunteers. If anyone is interested, please call
Jason on his cell at 227-3424, and he will work out the details.

SECOND: the Interim Steering Committee is calling an important and necessary Producers meeting on Thursday, August 30, 2007 at 7PM. We’re getting in touch
with all current producers to let you know first by phone, and then by
email –to make sure you can attend the meeting.*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,_,.-:*

-NEEDED: 800 mhz or higher zif processors for Mac: G4- or G5 desk top machines. KSKQ is looking for faster processor chips for their Mac computers. We like all our Macs and want to make them faster. Please contact  terryh@kskq.org. All Donations are tax deductible. Thanks KSKQ….

Peace Activism as an Option for Young Adults in Ashland By Charlie Delgado
August 21, 2007

Nestled in the serene, picturesque quiet hamlet of Ashland, an intellectually diverse, yet mostly aging community, Peace House of Ashland is surrounded by wealth and prosperity. Peace House has probably gained much more notoriety than it deserves –at least from the FBI’s perspective of being in same general category as Peace Fresno featured in the movie, Fahrenheit 9/11. It poses little danger, if any, of upsetting the local or national apple cart.

Why Peace?

In Ashland, as in so many other parts of the United States, people’s realities are for the most part whatever people want them to be. Peace or no peace –who cares? Peace can be just a word people leave out of their vocabularies entirely. Indeed, many related subjects can be discussed without even mentioning peace: government, elections, healthcare, taxes, the job market, wages, Iraq, and democracy, etc. True, peace activists everywhere today have a general sense that they want to stop the Iraq war, a war the American people were lied into, an illegal war of aggression in violation of the U.S. Constitution, a war that has been a Crime against the Peace and Crime against Humanity, and a war in which almost 4,000 American men and women have been killed and as many as 100,000 have been wounded, maimed, or permanently disfigured or damaged psychologically. But the motivation for stopping the Iraq war for most Ashland residents is distant, amorphous, removed, and theoretical at best. For Ashland residents, war is “there,” not here.

Pros and Cons

Traditionally, college students are much easier to “rally” when it comes to activism. There are arguments both for and against mobilizing college students for political activism. Some would argue that college and high school students are “just babies,” or naïve, vulnerable, and easily manipulated, and therefore it is unfair to target them for activism. College and high school students are sometimes said to lack an appreciation for the “bigger picture” of what is going on. They have not been around long enough to understand some of the causes of events that shape our country, our political system, and our world.

On the other side of the question, young adults have seemingly boundless amounts of energy and a passion for truth, which can easily be harnessed and channeled. Not least among their concerns is the fact that they are the ones who march off to war. They are therefore also the ones who risk their lives in the implementation of policies made by much older people. Often they find out much too late that, if they could do it all over again, they would not have listened to that military recruiter, signed up for the military, and gone off to engage in slaughter in the guise of “war.”

But on the cautionary side for peace activism organizers –as well as for young adults --mobilizing young adults can also run the risk of receiving accusations of subversion, fomenting unrest, sedition, endangering the mission, or even treason. And in a “war” atmosphere politically, these accusations can sometimes mean jail time for political mobilizers as well as for students or young adults. For it is precisely at such times that governments are all too eager to brand organizers and activists as “subversive elements.” And thanks to the USA Patriot Act, we now have a new category of criminality to contend with: “domestic terrorism.”

But today’s Ashland college students and high school students are more concerned with “law and order” than involving themselves in a political movement. Not least among their concerns is, “Where am I going to get a job after high school (or college)?” Thus, there is an understandable importance placed on grades or GPA, and the job market. Today, a college education is, after all, no guarantee for a good job after college. Increasingly, college students feel they have to first graduate in order to have a chance in today’s job market. And here again, in a business environment of political conservatism and modern laissez-faire capitalism focusing on globalization, many students are enticed into putting politics out of their minds entirely.

Relevance

Thus, for many young adult Ashland residents, peace is largely irrelevant. It is not even a topic for discussion. Well, we do know the topic of peace is not “on the table” in U.S. foreign policy circles in this country, that’s for sure. One can go about one’s daily routine completely oblivious of the need for peace in the world today. I have reason to believe that over a million Iraqi civilians have been killed at the hands of U.S. forces, and that the U.S. military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan is destabilizing the Middle East. But sadly, this is irrelevant to most people, especially to our young people. Or at least, it is unknown.

-SEPTEMBER EVENTS: First Nations Day/Eco Symposium pre-planning
Sept 28-30 Brisco Art Wing 265 N. Main
More info  http://www.redearthdescendants.org/home/ -  jaimiesclan@aol.com

Big Multi-group yard sale fundraiser for RED. September 1st 8am. More info to come!!

Goals and ideas for First Nations Day/Eco Symposium. THANK YOU all for what you've done so far and for helping out in whatever ways you can.

Thus far, we have the invitations to eco/enviro groups covered through Bobcat and Oshana. The Elders and Tribal people will be taken care of through our steering committee and Marsha Small. That leaves us with the following groups/people we need to work on contacting and inviting:
Eco/enviro/alternative energy vendors; Eco/enviro businesses who might have demonstrations, models, etc. (this could overlap with vending); Recycling businesses for our relying village; Food vendors; Other community members with resources, ideas, helping hands!

We also have our original wish list which still has needed items:

1. Contact our list of Southern Oregon recycling services and make invitations.
2. Elder sponsorship. 3. People to help set up Sky Lodge. 4. Vendor coordinator!! Didar has offered to help find food solutions, but we need someone helping
with the eco vendors.. 5. Grant writers. 6. Buffalo, elk, venison, salmon.
7. Print out posters and do the town!

We haven't yet heard anything from John Trudell about the possibility of being a key note speaker. Michael has sent for information on a grant from Mckenzie River Foundation and we'll be working on that. But as you know by now, our funding is mostly out-of-pocket and donation-based, along with what Whistling Elk contributes. We need to discuss costs for this event and how we'll make them. One thing we know we're doing for a fundraising project is a giant YARD SALE on Michael's lawn on September 1. BRING STUFF, preferably Friday evening, August 31. The sale will begin at 7 a.m. and we'll keep going all day, closing with an early potluck in lieu of our September Social--just moving it to the yard sale that day!

Also, remember that the Social/Potluck for August is this Saturday, Aug. 4 in the community room at SOU Student Family Housing, 1361 Quincy Street, Ashland.

And, meetings at Michael's on Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m., 2165 Hwy 99, Ashland.

Forward this around if I'm forgetting someone--I don't have access (still!) to our R.E.D. gmail, so I don't have a complete address list. Thanks.

Aloha. . .I'm off to dive into the wild blue. . . Blessings,Jaimie
