FCC Stifles Public Debate on Media Ownership. Public Given Little Time To Weigh in on Media Ownership and Minority Ownership Proposals

WASHINGTON - AUGUST 3 - The Federal Communications Commission yesterday asked for public comment on a series of proposals on minority media ownership — after nearly a year of inaction on the issue. In the landmark 2004 Prometheus decision, the FCC was ordered to address minority ownership proposals as part of its review of media ownership rules. But despite requests from civil rights and public interest groups for further review of the proposals, the FCC waited until after the release of 10 massive new ownership studies to seek public comment.

Despite the complexity and seriousness of the proposed rulemaking, the public was given only a narrow two-month window to evaluate and respond to both the studies and the minority ownership proposals. FCC Commissioners Jonathan Adelstein and Michael Copps released a statement yesterday criticizing the agency for the inadequate time given for public comment.

Free Press Research Director S. Derek Turner issued the following statement:

"The FCC's decision to rush the process of review and debate on the complex issue of media ownership does a major disservice to the public and this country's long history of democratic discourse.”

"The FCC has jammed two extremely important media ownership proceedings into an inexplicably short and overlapping public comment cycle. It took the 10 teams of researchers nearly a year to conduct, and finally deliver — after much delay — the 10 official ownership studies. Yet the FCC expects the public to digest, analyze and comment on this research in just 60 days, and then respond to potentially hundreds of other parties' assessments in little more than two weeks.”

"On top of this, the Commission is asking the public to weigh in on the very complex and important issue of minority ownership within the same arbitrarily truncated time period. The FCC has had a year to consider minority media ownership proposals, but has unreasonably chosen to move this issue forward while public focus is dispersed across the 10 official studies.

"The issue of minority media ownership is paramount. The FCC has a well-documented lack of understanding, oversight and action on this fundamental matter. The effort to short-circuit the public comment process is a sign that the Commission remains apathetic about adequately promoting a diverse and representative media."

2007 Ashland Hiroshima Nagasaki Vigil 9th

“The time has come for those nations that rely on the force of nuclear armaments to respectfully heed the voices of peace-loving people, not least the atomic bomb survivors, to strive in good faith for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and to advance towards the complete abolishment of all such weapons.” – The late Nagasaki Mayor Iccho Itoh

We are dedicated to moving the dream of nuclear abolition forward in honor of Mayor Itoh, the Mayor of Nagasaki, who was not only a founding member and Vice President of Mayors for Peace, but a lifetime advocate for nuclear abolition as a survivor of the bombing in 1945. Mayor Itoh was tragically murdered on April 17, 2007.

We are currently planning this year’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki commemoration to include two full days of vigil on the plaza Aug. 9th. On the 8th, a play reading will be held at RVML. Three related pre-vigil events are also planned, following the lead of national organizations including Mayors for Peace, Global Network, Abolition 2000, and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) Disarm Committee.

We will also share another vision of the future, including the Mayors for Peace Vision 2020, and the 13 Steps to Abolition, which is the UN-endorsed plan for nuclear abolition. On August 9th the vigil will begin on the plaza at 8 am to commemorate the destruction of Nagasaki. A closing ceremony will occur on the plaza in the early evening of the 9th.

This year we are including an early summer outreach component to other Mayors to join Mayors for Peace, a campaign that includes 1,631 Mayors in 120 regions and nations around the world. Ashland has been a member of the Mayors for Peace since becoming a Nuclear Free Zone in 1981.

Our local 2007 Ashland commemoration is the 22nd year of the vigil on the plaza, and this year is a diverse local collaboration, including the Rogue Valley Peace Choir, the Ashland Branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Medford Citizens for Peace and Justice, The Department of Peace, Veterans for Peace Grants Pass, Beyond War, the Women's Resource Center at SOU, the First Congregational UCC and Peace House. A group of volunteers are meeting regularly; constructing what we feel will be effective as both a heartfelt sincere commemoration and an event that addresses history, education, healing and the abolition of nuclear weapons. “In honoring Mayor Itoh’s life and commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons, let us add our own commitment to this cause so critical to humanity’s future,” said David Krieger, Nuclear Age Peace Foundation President.

Updates will be added to  http://www.atomicvigil.net, and further information about the international campaign is available at www.mayorsforpeace.org. To become involved with the local events or to volunteer contact Linda Richards at 488-1230 or Mary Lou Lucas at 482-4266 or email  atomic@mind.net.

-SEPTEMBER EVENTS: First Nations Day/Eco Symposium pre-planning
Sept 28-30 Brisco Art Wing 265 N. Main
More info  http://www.redearthdescendants.org/home/ -  jaimiesclan@aol.com

Goals and ideas for First Nations Day/Eco Symposium. THANK YOU all for what you've done so far and for helping out in whatever ways you can.

Thus far, we have the invitations to eco/enviro groups covered through Bobcat and Oshana. The Elders and Tribal people will be taken care of through our steering committee and Marsha Small. That leaves us with the following groups/people we need to work on contacting and inviting:
Eco/enviro/alternative energy vendors; Eco/enviro businesses who might have demonstrations, models, etc. (this could overlap with vending); Recycling businesses for our relying village; Food vendors; Other community members with resources, ideas, helping hands!

We also have our original wish list which still has needed items:

1. Contact our list of Southern Oregon recycling services and make invitations.
2. Elder sponsorship. 3. People to help set up Sky Lodge. 4. Vendor coordinator!! Didar has offered to help find food solutions, but we need someone helping
with the eco vendors.. 5. Grant writers. 6. Buffalo, elk, venison, salmon.
7. Print out posters and do the town!

We haven't yet heard anything from John Trudell about the possibility of being a key note speaker. Michael has sent for information on a grant from Mckenzie River Foundation and we'll be working on that. But as you know by now, our funding is mostly out-of-pocket and donation-based, along with what Whistling Elk contributes. We need to discuss costs for this event and how we'll make them. One thing we know we're doing for a fundraising project is a giant YARD SALE on Michael's lawn on September 1. BRING STUFF, preferably Friday evening, August 31. The sale will begin at 7 a.m. and we'll keep going all day, closing with an early potluck in lieu of our September Social--just moving it to the yard sale that day!

Also, remember that the Social/Potluck for August is this Saturday, Aug. 4 in the community room at SOU Student Family Housing, 1361 Quincy Street, Ashland.

And, meetings at Michael's on Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m., 2165 Hwy 99, Ashland.

Forward this around if I'm forgetting someone--I don't have access (still!) to our R.E.D. gmail, so I don't have a complete address list. Thanks.

Aloha. . .I'm off to dive into the wild blue. . . Blessings,Jaimie

-Message from: Michael Vasquez Transformation Arts An Invitation to Practice

"TRANSFORMATION ARTS", instruction & Programs in the Internal Arts of Chi Gung, Tai Chi, Yoga & Meditation Basics.

INSTRUCTOR: Michael Vasquez, 30 yrs. Experience:

Greetings to one & All To the Students of Transformation Arts.

It is always my desire to speak with everyone in a personal way and am always available for that, this email is just an invitation & reminder of the "Intensive" coming up. I am happy to see our class grow to consistent #'s & participation, as the practice is a multi-layer teaching that starts with self, un-raveling the past as it interferes with the present; physical traumas & the memories, patterns and habits that separate rhythms of our Physical health. The Physical inter-action guides us to the "2 way street" between mind and body to help us question why we hold on to less useful ways, unravel mental confusions, emotional fears, extreme & deficient conditions and general places that we may discover ourselves "at the mercy of ourselves". Beginning to know ourselves in a deeper, more open way leads us to facing "unknown things"; uncomfortable situations, boundaries and appropriate response to others in our family, community & social lives. This is the Natural Human way and comes with "being ourselves in every situation" and the resolve to listen & follow our own True Inner Voice. There seem to be many roads that can lead us back to ourselves, I have come to measure this by the results of my own healing and the ease or difficulty of the acceptance of change...

While I am fully aware of the moments of ecstatic realizations, heart-felt deep learning, relief from physical pains, emotional bondage, mental confusions and strengthening of the Spirit, I want you know of my deep respect for each of you that you choose to find your own way through; to unravel your own "Gordian Knot" and come to wholeness. By now you know that you are the only one who can do this, that nobody can save us from ourselves or learn for us so I want to say that it is a privilege to know and "travel" along side of you through this life and to watch & grow together; to do what we came to do, grow into a beautiful community, learn and evolve towards where we came from...

To those who may be considering the Intensive_It is a fine line to speak this way to people as it is my true feelings & I risk being interpreted by others who do not know me so well, as a clever marketing / advertising schemer (i am willing to risk it). Let me be honest, I would hope to peak your interest a little but having been at this for more than 30 yrs., I know that people come to this when they are ready...and not one moment sooner AND that these teachings are not "every ones cup of tea"; fair enough.

If you are receiving this email it is because I have interacted with you on some level (not always face to face) and felt a possibility of interest, it is an invitation without "strings". This Intensive is 2 days, 4 hrs. each so the rhythm for beginners with be different that for those longer- time practictioners; there will be plenty of breaks. These practices come from the Yo Sen Lien Wan Ba Gua Zhang Lineage Tradition which pre-dates "family style method". The basic level is translated as "the returning of the child" and is the foundation for self-applied Therapeutic principle & method. I mention this not as "credential", but more to give respect to those who have carried these traditions to us; I feel we should thank those who came before us, despite what we may feel about the condition of this world. We are all doing the best we can, we may even have been those people. I am not attempting to coerce you as I know that every one has a mind of their own. If you have interest or questions, feel free to contact me: cell-702 219-5184 / home- 201-8101

I thank you all for indulging me and this email...

Respectfully, Michael Vasquez Transformation Arts
