"Drown it in a bathtub!" - The Jackson Co. Library System

Media Watch Dawg, 28.05.2007 10:02

CLASSIC BY-THE-BOOK PRIVATIZATION PREYS ON JACKSON COUNTY, OREGON

Grover Norquist is the right wing mover and shaker who is famous for his widely quoted comment that he wants to shrink government "down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub."

Corporate newspaper whore, the Medford Mail Tribune produced its Saturday 5/26/07 edition as a HUGE front page advertisement for LSSI. LSSI is the company that wants to run OUR Jackson County Library System. The Mail Tribune's "news" is a sham as this smoke and mirrors' story could just as easily have been written by Grover Norquist himself.

Here is the story, front page above the fold and with lots of big black ink. Read it and weep.

Outside contractor for libraries?
In possible alternative, Maryland firm would run operations

CLASSIC BY-THE-BOOK PRIVATIZATION PREYS ON JACKSON COUNTY, OREGON

Grover Norquist is the right wing mover and shaker who is famous for his widely quoted comment that he wants to shrink government "down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub." This recipe for doing away with government services is played out successfully from sea to shining sea. The tried and proven "shrink government" plan is done by first underfunding services and then stepping in with the "more efficient" private sector which can do things so much better... Many, many people believe government is BAD, oh-so wasteful and Grover Norquist's recipe is gaining traction...all the while corporate America is laughing all the way to the bank and to shareholder meetings, too.

Just look at where we have come in Jackson County where we have shut down all of our 15 libraries, the entire library system... But as you can see, now there is a plan to "rescue" the system... Today's front page Medford Mail Tribune newspaper story is music to the ears of Grover Norquist followers, in this case the Jackson County Commission. This decison-making group of three has labor-friendly Dr. Dave Gilmour who is shut down politically time and time again by Grover's buddies - the other two Commissioners: Jack Walker and C.W. Smith. Jack and C.W. are Norquist believers and they have the Commission majority which means they have the power. And they have Dow Jones Inc. on their side, too (the owners of the Medford Mail Tribune)......

Here is the story, front page above the fold and with lots of big black ink. Read it and weep.

Public libraries...for private profit?
28.05.2007 - 10:18
Dear Jackson County citizens

"Sanctions." Does the word indicate disapproval, or approval?

"Free." Does it have the same meaning in free market and free country? Hardly, since a free market exemplifies One Dollar/One "Vote"; a free country, One Person/One Vote.*

People with agendas use the multiple meanings in ordinary language for persuasion. Remember that auto commercial? "It's not just your car. It's your freedom."*

"Save" is another word ripe for exploitation. For instance, a credit card company tells us the more we spend, the more we save--in a high-interest account, no less.

And here in Jackson County headlines suggest we can save 40% by allowing a business to profit from running our public libraries. Not well presented are the context and down side of permitting this. (Perhaps A.J. Liebling's insight applies: "Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one.")

President Lincoln spoke of a "government of the people, by the people, and for the people." What happens to our capacity for self-government (One Person/One Vote) if we allow One Dollar/One "Vote" to take over more and more public property, more and more of the commons?

There's a long-established marketplace principle: caveat emptor (buyer beware). Now is a good time to remember it.

Comments welcomed.

Stan
