-The American Activist - Wed, 4/12/07, 12noon-2pm(PT)
Hello KSKQ/American Activists listeners, This week on The American Activist, Hosted by Mary Dodd and live music by Patrick Dodd. Kerul Dwyer has agreed to talk with us tomorrow. I first came to know Kerul at the greenbridge camp at the Buscuit
Forest Defense camp. Kerul has quite a history; but
tomorrow we will focus on her time spent in New Orleans after
Katrina. Karul is a key member of common ground,
http://www.commongroundrelief.org/ Common Ground has been
the leading organization helping Katrina survivors, with
everything from housing recovery to health care. We will
talk about how the poor/African American community was treated
from before the storm hit, how they were treated after the
storm, throughout the "rebuilding" efforts--to date. We
will talk about Blackwater, the police sate, and the need for
community police review. We will talk about systematic
property theft...permanent dislocation and economic
abandonment of a population. We will talk about what we can do to
help.

A Union Man: "A Union Man" is the story of his life through his eyes as well as those he’s met and worked with. A documentary film featuring guest appearances by Utah Phillips, Faith Petric and former NMU Vice President Joe Stack, as well as concert performances, this is an affectionate portrait of a rank-and-file activist still in the struggle for justice and workers’ rights. Car lot on the Center of Campus: So timely now with all that is going on at SOU, “Car Lot” shows Town and Country Chevrolet setting up a car lot in the center of a public university! OPEU Dist. 4 productions. - 10 minutes
Loose Change: Provides without a shadow of a doubt, that what happened on September 11, 2001 was no act carried out by nineteen hijackers affiliated with Al Qaeda, nor a plan implemented by Osama Bin Laden. Instead, the infamous event was a cold, calculated, and malicious attack on the American people carried out by a group of tyrants ready and willing to do whatever it takes to keep their strangled hold on this country; 9/11 was a self-inflicted wound. All that is asked of you when viewing the documentary produced by Dylan Avery is to watch it with an open mind--set aside your political beliefs indefinitely. Remember, Loose Change is only an eye-opener; new evidence of the inside-job is revealed each and every day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday April 17 7pm to 10pm Mulkey Auditorium; Hosted by RED EARTH DESCENDANTS - Music by Whistling Elk Drum: Contact Michael Vazquez

Molly Ivins comes to Southern Oregon: On Oct. 24, 2003, Molly Ivins made an incredible appearance at the Medford Armory that was organized by Peace House and co-sponsored by Citizens for Peace & Justice. Jeff Golden was the MC that evening when the building was jammed with about 2,000 folks, one of the largest gatherings of progressives ever in this valley. - 58:11 minutes
La Tomade los Medios estilo Oaxaqueno: ("The Taking of the Media - Oaxaca Style"), Spanish with English sub-titles -
The Miami Model: In November 2003, trade ministers from 34 countries met in Miami, Florida, to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). To show their opposition to the FTAA, thousands of union members, environmentalists, and human rights activists also gathered in Miami. What happened there was a disturbing example of the state of free speech under a wartime president. Protestors were attacked with rubber bullets, pepper spray, electric tazer guns, and shock batons, all coordinated by the new United States Department of Homeland Security, and paid for by an $8.5 million line item within the $87 billion appropriation for the Iraq war. THE MIAMI MODEL also showcases the issues that drove the protestors to Miami, and the alternative models of grassroots resistance, creative action sustainable development, and solidarity that they came to promote
The Wealthy Fore$t(ers) Initiative: This production takes a look at the Biscuit Burn, an area fire that was the largest in all of the United States, and puts into perspective the so-called “healthy forest initiative”, the current federal forest plan which is backed by big corporate lumber, Oregon’s Representative Greg Walden and the Bush Administration.
This video exposes a wolf in sheep’s clothing with multiple interviews conducted on site within the Biscuit Burn. Viewers will see footage showing an area that is not “all blackened trees that have to be harvested before they go to waste” (the hype). Learn the other side of the story and aside from the corporate hype find out how the healthy forest initiative is really the wealthy fore$t(ers) initiative.

3rd Annual INDEPENDENT MEDIA WEEK Ashland, OR April 15 – 21 ‘07
Indi music, indi videos, indi media, guest speakers all week: including Earth Day events.
Don't Hate The Media, Be The Media! Ashland Oregon's Independent Media Week 2007 will showcase
a coalition of independent media producers, local activists and
community groups organized around the theme that:
"A well-informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy"
Running April 15th - 21st, the 3rd annual Independent Media
Week is a grassroots campaign to inform and empower citizens by
showcasing local efforts and to expand and inspire hyper-local media
production.
Independent Media Week events include two public concerts,
a week-long film festival, an open mic / free speech event and campus
tabling.
In April 2005, the City of Ashland officially proclaimed
its first Independent Media Week. With a goal to broadcast "Democracy
Now" and launch KSKQ, a local low-power FM radio station. The
headline speaker at the event was Amy Goodman of "Democracy Now". Every
year since, the Rogue Independent Media Center has asked the City of
Ashland to proclaim the 3rd week in April, Independent Media Week and
are working to put this proclamation on the City Council agenda for
early April.
Once again, media activists and community volunteers are
Organizing the week's activities, and is inviting participation and
Attendance from all interested citizens and organizations. This year,
groups will be hosting independent media and video showcases every
evening, including unplugged acoustic entertainment from local
independent performers and student musicians.
Evening films will be shown free at the Mulkey Auditorium;
SOU Campus, upstairs Churchill Hall across from Library - Mon-Thurs.,
7pm to 10pm. Coalition partners will host the evening events. All
groups will provide information and activities throughout the week at

PROCLAMATION
- A well-informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy.
- An informed citizenry depends on an objective, responsible
and unrestrained press, which provides greater access to accurate information, more points of view and greater diversity of thought and fact.
- The trend toward the consolidation of media ownership has
resulted in journalistic practices that hinder public awareness by
excluding or marginalizing minority and dissenting viewpoints.
- Fewer media voices can result in homogenized messaging and
the silencing of many points of view.
- Democratic principles support the case for more independent media in this
country, not less.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John W. Morrison, Mayor of Ashland, do
Hereby proclaim the week of April 15 - 21 as INDEPENDENT MEDIA
WEEK and encourage all Ashland citizens to seek out and explore the
rich diversity of independent media available within, and to our
community.
