Where’s Walden? – Join Us in Holding Walden Accountable

CITIZENS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY, 28.03.2007 15:16

Dear Friends demanding accountability:

On March 20, six grandmothers were arrested at Congressman Greg Walden’s office in Bend, Oregon. They waited for 12 hours to speak with Mr. Walden regarding funding of the occupation of Iraq, unnecessary risks to US troops and Iraqi civilians, and risks of escalating to a war with Iran  http://rogueimc.org/en/2007/03/8127.shtml

In solidarity with them, Citizens for Peace & Justice ( http://www.medfordcpj.org) and other concerned citizens will be visiting Walden’s Medford office at 2:30 pm this Friday, March 30, to remind Walden that his constituents overwhelmingly support withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Several Rogue Valley women will deliver citizens' e-mails, letters and a resolution of the Rural Organizing Project (ROP) to Congressman Walden (see resolution below) . Other advocates for troop safety and government accountability will be out front showing support with signs including “Where’s Walden?,” “Fund Books Not Bombs!” and “Bring Our Troops Home Now!”.

Where’s Walden? – Join Us in Holding Walden Accountable

Please send us your e-mail letter for Congressman Walden addressing his refusal to attend the Cost of War Iraq Town Halls; his refusal to meet with the six women in Bend; and his consistent pattern of voting for funding the Iraq Occupation. For cost statistics, see the National Priorities Project website,  http://nationalpriorities.org.

Send your letters to Congressman Walden, c/o Citizen's for Peace and Justice, to:
- Mary Madsen at  mrymads@charter.net, or
- Ruth Dailey at  rdailey@grantspass.com.
- Hal Anthony at  threepines@jeffnet.org
Or, contact any of the above and tell us that you approve of the resolution and authorize us to use your name on the copy of this Resolution.

The Resolution from ROP urges Congressman Walden to vote “NO” on new appropriations for Iraq; to stop any conflict with Iran; and to get responsible about the cost of the Iraq war. If you can, please join us at Walden’s Medford, Oregon office at 2:30 pm this Friday, at 843 East Main Street. Our signs will include “Where’s Walden?,” “Fund Books Not Bombs!” and “Bring Our Troops Home Now!” Please bring a sign of your own.

It's time to demand that Walden represent his constituency majority. Please join us this Friday, and/or add your name to this Resolution. CPJ thanks the many hundreds who came to our Peace advocacy event on March 17, 2007, "BRING TROOPS HOME NOW! Fund Books, Not Bombs". We need your help again.

Yours in Peace,

Allen Hallmark, Mary Madsen & Hal Anthony for
Citizens for Peace & Justice, members and affiliates

WHEREAS, the members of Oregon’s 2nd Congressional District gathered at the February 17, 2007, Cost of War Town Hall to support the men and women deployed in Iraq and honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the war, and

WHEREAS, the U.S. involvement in Iraq has resulted in the deaths of more than 3,200 U.S. troops, including 79 from Oregon to date, and the wounding and disabling of more than 22,000 U.S. military personnel to date, and as many as 600,000 Iraqi deaths, and

WHEREAS rural America is home to a disproportionate number of soldiers who have served in Iraq, with a death rate 60% higher than for soldiers from urban and suburban areas, and

WHEREAS, more than $343 billion has been appropriated by Congress to fund military operations and reconstruction to date, and

WHEREAS, Oregon has spent almost $3 billion and the 2nd Congressional District has spent $525.1 million as of February 7, 2007 on the war and occupation in Iraq, and

WHEREAS taxpayers in the 2nd Congressional District have other priorities such as affordable housing, health insurance, public education, and economic development, and

WHEREAS, it should be clearly acknowledged that only a greater measure of international cooperation can create safety and security in Iraq, and

WHEREAS the United States military occupation of Iraq has placed significant strains on the capability of the United States Armed Forces, both active duty and reserve, and strained the Oregon National Guard’s ability to respond to wildfires and other disasters while putting undue pressure on local and state economies:

WE THE PEOPLE of the Oregon 2nd Congressional District resolve the following:

1. We urge Congressman Walden, and Senators Wyden and Smith to vote NO on any new appropriations for the Iraq Occupation. This means voting NO on the new request of $240 billion for Iraq through 2008. We urge Congressman Walden and Senators Smith and Wyden to use the money currently in the pipeline to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq immediately.

2. We urge Congressman Walden, and Senators Wyden and Smith to act now to stop any widening of the conflict and any attack on Iran.

3. We urge Congressman Walden to provide to every constituent in District 2 an accounting of the cost of the Iraq occupation.

4. We, the undersigned groups and individuals, pledge to work cooperatively and across District 2 to ensure that our elected officials act in accordance with resolutions 1, 2, and 3.

Affirmed by voice vote at the February 17th, 2007 Town Hall for Congressman Walden and Senators Smith and Wyden. This Resolution was also approved during the week of March 25-30 by the following citizens who gave their consent to Citizens for Peace & Justice by e-mail:

Demanding accountability
03.04.2007 - 09:37
Why don't you people demand actual accountability. Why don't you hold Gov. Kulongoski accountable for his wasteful spending on the Oregon budget. Why don't you hold him accountable for his grand-standing of putting his name on boxes of food for Malaysia that were donated by others. Why don't you hold David Wu accountable for attempting to rape some lady while he was in college? Why don't you hold the state school's leadership accountable for using 56% of our budget without making any strides toward improvement? Hopefully your readers will wake up and hold you accountable for printing shallow trash like this story about 6 caring old ladies with apparently no concern for the future of the American way of life vs the Islamist movement hell bent on destroying our way of life.
