Major Peace March and Peace Forum on March 17th in Medford
In her final column, entitled "Stand Up Against the Surge", Molly Ivins wrote: "We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. ... We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!'"
In solidarity with peace events in Washington, DC, and across the nation, hundreds of Rogue Valley citizens will gather in Medford on Saturday, March 17th to protest the Iraq Occupation and to hold a Peace Forum to raise public awareness about the cost of funding militarism and war as the 4th anniversary of the war occurs.
The theme of the event is a dual one: Bring the Troops Home Now! / Fund Books Not Bombs.
Citizens for Peace & Justice (CP&J) of Medford in partnership with many other local organizations urges all who oppose the Iraq Occupation to join in a massive anti-war demonstration and march followed by a Peace Forum on March 17th to mark the beginning of the 5th year of this disastrous war.
The demonstration against the war will be held from 11 am to noon at the corner of Barnett Road and Riverside Avenue in Medford (by Burger King). Participants are invited to bring their own signs and banners against the war or for peace in Iraq. At about noon protestors will march up Central Avenue to the Medford Central Library, where the Rogue Valley Peace Choir will greet them with a song. A few short speeches will follow.
Participants are urged to bring a sack lunch with them to the demonstration. At about 1 pm the Peace Forum will convene in the large meeting room of the Medford Library. Speakers will include state Rep. Peter Buckley, author Mike Green, Dennis Kyne (disabled veteran of Operation Desert Storm and prominent member of Veterans for Peace) and Linda Richards (Women's International League for Peace & Freedom).
The Peace Forum will focus on generating positive ideas about how to build a consensus among citizens and members of Congress about how the war can be brought to an end, how our precious soldiers and sailors can be brought home and how our national priorities rebalanced. This will be an interactive Forum with comments and suggestions from the audience encouraged.
Partners with CP&J organizing the event include: Peace House, Veterans for Peace of Grants Pass, the Social Justice Alliance of Josephine County, Applegate Citizens for Political Change, Women in Black of Medford and Ashland, Women's International League for Peace & Freedom, Medford Congregational United Church of Christ, First Congregational UCC Ashland, World Cant Wait (Southern Oregon), the SOU Peace Club, the Jackson County Democratic Party, Global Advocates (Medford), Socialist Action (Ashland Branch), Unitarian Universalists Political Advisory Committee (Grants Pass) and Interfaith PEACE NOW.

just bring 'em home Antiwar Movement Marks 4th Anniversary of U.S. Invasion of Iraq With Protest Actions in All 50 States NEW YORK -- As the 4th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq approaches, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) released information today about plans for local antiwar activities around the country in the coming days. In response to a call from UFPJ, the national coalition that brought hundreds of thousands of people to Washington, DC, on January 27th, locally based antiwar groups in all 50 states are organizing events ranging from rallies and vigils to marches and nonviolent civil disobedience actions. At present more than 500 activities have been listed on the UFPJ website calendar, and more are coming in each day. Taken together with vigils and actions coordinated by UFPJ allies MoveOn.org, Working Assets, TrueMajority and the Declaration of Peace, more than 1,000 local actions will mark the beginning of the 5th year of war. Some of the major events in the coming days include: *Rally for Peace in Fayetteville, NC: On Saturday, March 17th, this military town will be where military families, Iraq war veterans, and veterans of other wars will gather with people from throughout the South to march behind the banner demanding: Real Support for the Troops, Bring Them Home Now! *Veterans Caravan to the Gulf Coast: Veterans for Peace will launch its second caravan from Fayetteville after the March 17th rally, bound for the Gulf Coast, where the huge task of recovery and rebuilding remains far from finished. The caravan will include representatives from Veterans For Peace, Gold Star Families for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Iraq Veterans Against the War, signers of the Appeal For Redress, and possibly several war resisters. *More than 100 towns in Maine will hold vigils as part of a campaign called "From Every Village Green." *NYC March to End the War: On March 18, United for Peace and Justice/NYC is calling every New Yorker, every community group, every church, mosque and synagogue, every student organization, every tenant association, every labor union to join them in the streets to say NO MORE! *March 16-19, the Declaration of Peace Campaign, building on the work begun last fall, will engage in nonviolent civil disobedience and peaceful resistance in cities across the United States. *March 16: Christian Peace Witness for Iraq in Washington, DC. Leslie Cagan, National Coordinator of UFPJ, said, "While Congress discusses what steps they might take, the antiwar movement is once again taking to the streets in large numbers to demand an immediate end to the war in Iraq and for all U.S. troops to be brought home now. Throughout the nation, people are marking the 4th anniversary of this horrendous war by making their voices heard in the town squares and public spaces within their own communities. As important as the large national marches are, the heart and soul of this movement is at the local level." United for Peace and Justice, the largest antiwar coalition with more than 1,400 member groups under its umbrella, will continue to coordinate both locally based and national actions in the weeks and months ahead. We call on Congress to stand up to the Bush Administration and use its Constitutional power to cut off funding for the war and set a date for all of the troops to be brought home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.unitedforpeace.org | 212-868-5545

Statement of Purpose... This site is a crime against the Military Selective Service Act. It advocates. We are specifically encouraging resistance to the registration laws of the United States, seeing registration as the necessary step toward conscription (the draft). We are what the Selective Service calls 'anti-war intellectuals.' We see the direct link between registration, the draft, and aggressive war. Remember, non- registration is the strategy to beat the draft. If enough of us refuse, there is nothing they can do! -- Scott A Kohlhaas scott@draftresistance.org
