Head Cracker Versus Problem Solver?

Vegan1forPeace reports, "Found: Hints at a contrast between the two candidates for Ashland Police Chief"
A look at media's attempts to spotlight the hiring of a new Chief of Police for Ashland, Oregon... Folks are looking at newspaper articles and a television interview to find hints of differences in the two top dogs who are competing for the top cop job
Vegan1forPeace continues reporting:
According to the Ashland Daily Tidings,
http://www.dailytidings.com/2006/1213/stories/1213_chief_forum.php, there are two candidates for Ashland Police Chief:
- Terry Holderness, a police captain in Fontana, Calif. since 2000. He started as a patrol officer there in 1981, and prior to that worked with Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the City of Corona.
- Gary Hicken, who retired as the chief of the Buena Park, Calif. police department in 2004, served as the chief of police in Buena Park since 2001. He worked his entire career with that department, beginning as a patrol officer in 1975.
I went looking for more information about them. Holderness has an article at
http://www.communitypolicing.org/artbytop/w3/w3-hlder.htm where he describes a problem solving approach to the effects of homeless people on the tourist businesses of Fontana.
In contrast, I found a reference to Hicken at
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/605153/posts where Hicken is said to have said that he wanted all the homeless out of Buena Park.
This is not definitive, but I would like to know more about what the Tidings said City Administrator Martha Bennett referred to as "experience dealing with homeless people and tourist towns" before a choice is made.

Just a hint is right! 14.12.2006 - 21:55 Did you see RVTV's interview of the candidates? What a poorly conducted program. I have seen Tim Bewley do some good interviews before, but this was a poor attempt of showing the public any differences between these two candidates. The instructions that "this is no debate" coupled with an open invitation that the candidates "concur" with each other created an atmosphere that failed to uncover the differences that a good interview would have found. Having said that I agree that we were shown a hint of difference between two candidates. Lieutenant Terry Holderness is the choice between the two, little thanks to this RVTV blunder. They both like tasers, but it seems that Gary Hicken might likely approve of on-the-job taser training using our homeless for target practice. The kill two birds with one stone approach. I vote for Holderness. Lets have another Ashland Election and a recount, too. And let's ALL use paper ballots! Let's send Head Cracker walking. Wes> The Nondebate 15.12.2006 - 20:45 I just watched the nondebate - it can be streamed from the city website, which is nice. Holderness was badly miked, so it was difficult to hear all he was saying at points, but it did sound that he was acknowledging that tasers are potentially lethal, and he seemed more fluent in talking about a problem-solving kind of community policing. I would also have to vote for Holderness..... Vegan1forpeace> Voting On Ashland's Next Police Chief 16.12.2006 - 16:44 Thanks to the persistence of the newly formed Southern Oregon Comunity Coalition, City agreed to acommunity job interview of the 2 finalists for Police Chief, held yesterday. (Southern Oregon Community Coalition is a 5-month old group that links community groups on key issues. The first issue tackled was community policing and the selection of Ashland's Police Chief.) The community job interview lasted 1.5 hours, was televised live, and posed over 2 dozen community-generated questions to the 2 candidates. You can now vote in an independent, unofficial poll about which of the 2 candidates you prefer as Police Chief. To vote for Terry or Gary, send an email to AshlandCouncil@yahoogroups.com.

You can read the candidates' resumes at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AshlandCouncil/files
You can see the RVTV replay of this ground-breaking community job interview and Mon 12/18/06 at 9pm (see http://www.roguetv.org for channels).

This is a key opportunity. Votes and comments are due by Monday, Dec 18, 2006. Art Bullock> Fontana ?? 18.12.2006 - 22:28 Fontana doesn't have tourists. It may have homeless people, but no human being in the last 70 years with destination money burning a hole in the pocket has ever said "Let's go to Fontana". adminteer> Fontana is more then meets the eye 19.12.2006 - 22:57 True, you don't hear many people say "Lets go to Fontana" but there are several reasons why it is in fact a tourist destination. Its right by the california speedway, the police department help with race events, many people who come to the races stay in Fontana and the city has a festival for the big races every year and famous drivers turn up at the event. Fontana is also home to the worlds fastest half marathon course and runners from around the world turn up to improve their time. Sure its not a major destination, but the city does get its share of tourists. RM> The Top Hot Topic 20.12.2006 - 17:40 The tasering case from last January is now the top "Hot Topic" on the Daily Tidings website: http://www.dailytidings.com/2006/1124/stories/1124mandy.php
