Medford City Council Hearing
RE: Wal-Mart Supercenter in Medford, Oregon
Location: Medford City Council Chambers, 411 W. Eighth Street
WAL-MART will add 8,755 additional vehicle trips per day...
Why Not Require a Traffic Study?
Walmart costs communities in many ways
Two years ago, Medford's Site Plan and Architectural Committee (SPAC) decided that no traffic study was necessary for the Wal-Mart Supercenter at Miles Field, but the state Land Use Board of Appeals ruled the city had not adequately explained why. If a traffic study shows the current system will fail, then Wal-Mart - not taxpayers - would have to pay for the improvements.
Unfortunately, SPAC recently stuck by its earlier decision, although city code requires a study for projects that will generate more than 250 average daily trips. If Wal-Mart will add 8,775 trips per day, why not require a traffic study?
IT'S NOT OVER! The issue goes to the Medford City Council on June 1 where residents and business owners will urge the City Council to ask Wal-Mart for an adequate traffic study to analyze the impacts of almost 9,000 additional car trips per day in the already congested South Medford I-5 Interchange area.
Please help and let the City Council know that a comprehensive traffic study should be required before the project can proceed. Development should be required to pay for itself, and not shift the burden to taxpayers!
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
1) Attend the hearing on June 1 and show the council you care about your city's future.
2) Download and sign our petition that supports a comprehensive study of any new development that would create a significant impact to local roads...get your friends and family to sign too! Then return to City Council before the hearing.
The petition is available for download from our website

Hercules, CA uses eminent domain 25.05.2006 - 08:19 The city of Hercules, CA is attempting to use eminent domain to keep Wal-Mart from ruining their waterfront (though other large chains like Pottery Barn may be welcome) http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/05/24/BAGM8J15531.DTL
Shelley's comment on the ACA listserv> COME TO THE WAL*MART HEARING 31.05.2006 - 19:36 Friends, Your City Needs You! City Council Meeting - Thursday June 1, 2006 - 7pm City Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, 411 W. Eighth St., Medford This Thursday, the Medford City Council will hear our appeal to require a traffic study for the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter. Why not require a traffic study? Wal-Mart estimates the Supercenter would generate an 8,755 additional vehicle trips per day, but their study says nothing about the impact of these trips on intersections surrounding the site or on the already congested South Medford I-5 Interchange area. It makes sense to analyze the impacts of almost 9,000 additional car trips per day and most importantly, what improvements are necessary. If a traffic study showed the current system would fail, then Wal-Mart - not taxpayers - would have to pay for the improvements. Unfortunately, SPAC recently stuck by its earlier decision, although city code requires a study for projects that will generate more than 250 average daily trips. Development should be required to pay for itself, but the City's "wait-and-see" approach will pass the cost to tax-payers. Be seen, but not heard? Citizen Involvement Stifled The SPAC hearing was scheduled during a business day, and at Thursday's hearing comments may be limited to those who filed the appeal, and then only to certain issues. According the City Code, any person has standing if they appeared in the initial proceedings orally or in writing; and who has interests adversely affected by the decision. Since City staff is expected to advise the Council to limit testimony; we've secured the help of a Portland based land-use attorney to argue not only the concerns about traffic and compatibility, but also our right to participate. Demand Smart Choices for Medford! Speak without saying a word. Attend the hearing on June 1 and show the council you care about your city's future. Even though public testimony may not be accepted; your attendance can make a big difference. A great public turnout will send a clear message to the City of Medford that residents want smart development choices. If you haven't send comments yet, it's not too late! Email your Mayor and Council members: Tell them you want responsible development choices for Medford and urge them to require Wal-Mart to conduct an adequate traffic study to analyze the impacts of almost 9,000 additional car trips per day in the already congested South Medford I-5 Interchange area. I was a fringe (Way fringey) member of The Rogue Valley's business community for a long period. Your Chamber Of Commerce is not composed of your friends. If you don't know this is a turf war between the established thieves and the Johnny Come Latelies, look again. My thought is we could nationalize Wal-Mart and send any who object to The Re-educatin Center. Now you have the right wingers all fired up and it all seems to be a waste of time and is interfereing with my light reading. I can't wait to browse the rest of the pages. Student> |
