Oregon Fair Trade Coalition, 06.07.2005 20:47

WHAT: Rally Against CAFTA With Peter Defazio in Medford
WHEN: Monday, July 11th
TIME: NOON
WHERE: Alba Park - 301 W. Main Street - Medford

We know what NAFTA meant for Oregon
CAFTA would be even worse

The Central American Free Trade Agreement is about to come up for a vote in the House of Representatives.

What Will Greg Walden Do?

-help say
-help say "NO to CAFTA"-

Southern Oregonians understand what a lost job means for working families. We have seen too many of our jobs shipped overseas. In the last decade Oregon has lost 14,000 jobs because of NAFTA and now there is an attempt to expand the free trade area into Central America. The new Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) has passed in the Senate and will come to a vote in the House any day. Our Representative, Congressman Greg Walden, could cast the deciding vote to stop CAFTA and the outsourcing of Oregon Jobs.

Congressman Walden understands how important jobs are to voters in his district. But he is facing pressure from the House leadership to vote for CAFTA and the outsourcing of Oregon jobs. We need to give Congressman Walden the courage to make the right decision and vote no on CAFTA. Please take a moment to call Walden's office (1-800-533-3303) and ask him to keep Oregon jobs in Oregon and vote no on CAFTA because it's the right thing to do.

SIGN PETITION TODAY

What will Walden do? Will he vote with Oregon workers or against us?

Please join me today in signing a petition that will be faxed directly to Congressman Walden's Medford office urging him to vote NO on CAFTA.

Here is the link to the petition:

Sign today and forward to all your friends and family in Walden's district.

The Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) was approved by the US Senate on Thursday in a 54-45 vote, the narrowest margin that any major trade agreement has passed through the Senate in over a decade. The vote will now move to the house of representatives, where stronger opposition is expected. Global Exchange has put out a nationwide call for citizens to call their member of congress to stop DR-CAFTA in the house.

Local Leaders Pen Thoughts in Mail Trombone
09.07.2005 - 09:34
Two of the Rogue Valley's leaders stand up tall, and their letters-to-the-editor get some ink in the 7/9/05 edition of the Medford Mail Tribune. Here is what they say:

"Get message to Walden"
Rep. Greg Walden still hasn't committed to vote no on CAFTA. The vote is possible next Monday. I want him to make his commitment to Oregon workers and farmers now! Free trade agreements have cost Oregonians thousands of jobs, and CAFTA will only make it worse! We need living- wage jobs in Southern Oregon, not outsourcing. Call Greg Walden (776-4646) and tell him "Protect Oregon and Oregon's living wage jobs. Keep our jobs in Oregon!" - Linda Richards, Ashland

"CAFTA vote is crucial"
The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) is the next step in Bush's plan to turn the American continents into a giant trade block.

The House may vote on CAFTA as early as Monday and Greg Walden remains undecided. Call Congressman Walden at 776-4646 and urge him to vote against CAFTA, preserving Oregon's manufacturing jobs. Ask him to stand against outsourcing to countries with sweatshops and low environmental standards. - Brenda Gould, Medford
