First Annual Green Hero Awards Banquet

Jackson County Greens, 03.06.2005 18:05

Taking Time Out to Celebrate and Give Thanks

Dear Jackson County Greens & Friends,

We are all so busy fighting the good fight and working hard to build a better community and a better world, that it's difficult to take the needed time to relax, celebrate, and honor those who have provided inspiration and served as role models in the process. This coming Sunday (June 5), we have a rare opportunity, in conjunction with a local observance of World Environment Day, to pay tribute to a number of our peers, and in doing so, help inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

World Environment Day, 2005

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and adopted by the US Senate in 1995 to raise environmental awareness and to encourage action to protect the environment.

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on June 5th, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. More than 100 cities world-wide celebrate the day.

A primary purpose of World Environment Day is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

It is in the interest of the citizens of all communities in all nations to encourage environmentally sustainable development policies that allow for the preservation and renewal of natural resources.

The World Environment Day theme selected for 2005 is "Green Cities" and the slogan is "Plan for the Planet!"

Mayors from around the world met in San Francisco June 1-5, 2005 to celebrate Green Cities and create a plan for a sustainable urban future.

"World Environment Day 2005 represents the seeds we have in common rather than those which separate us. The concept of Green Cities transcends borders celebrating our common humanity. Educating global citizens regarding the importance of green cities is a subject that merits international media coverage." -- Heidi Kuhn, WED 2005 Chairperson.
