Open letter to Rep Walden to support HR2239

, 05.01.2004 18:30

HR2239 would require electronic voting machines to produce a paper receipt allowing for verification of elections. Please write Rep Walden and let him know you want him to support this bill.

Dear Representative Walden,

I urge you to support HR2239.

As a software engineer, I understand the vulnerability of computer systems to malice, hacking and abuse. The power being concentrated into the hands of Diebold and other voting equipment manufacturers is a tempting cherry ripe for the picking by the corruptible. It is essential to the health of our democracy that improvements to the elector system include mechanisms to prevent fraud and abuse. After all, we are given a receipt when we make the most trivial of purchases on our credit cards, when we buy groceries, and when we make a bank deposit. While we trust these institutions with our money, we limit our trust and require a paper record to catch mistakes and prevent accidents as well as to reduce the potential for institutional fraud. Elections are far more important than purchases at the corner market. My vote is worth far more than my checking account ever could be. HR2239 will require that a receipt is created for the voter. This paper receipt can be used in close elections to authenticate results and in every election to assure that the systems are working properly. We gain the benefit of swift electronic convenience as well as the possibility to prove the results. I urge you to make this bill a priority for you in the coming year, to devote staff to the issue, to publicize your support and take an active role in preserving and enhancing our democratic principles.

My vote counts on this bill.

John Fricker

JOHN, John, john...

What are you thinking? Surely good thoughts and I agree with you on your letter to greg, but surely you know how we play the game in the republican party.

John, its all about $money$. The promotion of capitalism. The piling up of the dough by my supporters. Big Buisness. The folks who bought me.

John you have good intentions. But you don't have enought money.

Support HB 2239
06.01.2004 - 10:34
Dear Congressman Walden,

Please vote in support of HB 2239 requiring that all voting machines include a paper receipt which reflects the vote registered. Computers are subject to error occassionally, they are not perfect instruments. The only way to insure an honest vote is via a paper trail. If there is not a paper trail, there should be no computer voting.

Sincerely yours,

Mary-Kay Michelsen
