Promethius to visit Southern Oregon in Januar

People in Southern Oregon interested in lpfm radio need to meet together with the Prometheus Radio Project lpfm experts from Pennsylvania in January. Read below and then...any thoughts? suggestions?
Dear Friends in Oregon:
Greetings from the Prometheus Radio Project! We are planning a roadtrip across Oregon to visit some new low power stations and check out possible locations for a radio barnraising in Oregon this spring. A radio barnraising is where we gather everyone from the Oregon region who wants to learn radio skills and we all build a station from scratch over the course of a weekend. These events not only build radio stations, but build solidarity among the new groups who will be running them. You can see more about the last station that we built with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers at:

(These Barnraisings are very fun...it would be great to have one here!...suzia)
We will be on the road during the last week of January, visiting low power radio applicants and community radio supporters around Oregon. We will visit as many of you as we can manage, bringing tips about equipment, fundraising, programming the licensing process and so on. We can look over your application and check your status, evaluate your station sites, and generally get your group revved up for the work ahead.
We are also happy to speak publicly in classes, libraries, coffee shops, living rooms or anywhere to talk about the movement for a more democratic media, upcoming campaigns and events, and hold strategy sessions on the next steps to win more low power radio licenses over the long haul. The fight against the corporations that own the media is heating up and we want to spread the word about the many strategies that we are using to fight the media moguls, and invite your community to plug in to the struggle!
Almost all of Prometheus Radio Project's services are free. When we travel, we ask that you find us a place to sleep (a couch is fine) if we are staying the night in town, and we often pass the hat for donations if we speak at a public event. We sell books and tee shirts and will gladly accept tax-deductible donations to keep us going... If your organization is a school or other institutional setting, and we are giving a lecture or teaching a class, we ask for an honorarium if possible to support our work. We are also available for full trainings and station construction projects on a contract basis.
Depending on what you need, we can often stay for up to a day, and while we are in town you can schedule us for as many things as you like. A typical day in a Prometheus visit might involve a site visit to the studio and transmitter sites, a public talk about the movement for low power radio, a station meeting with the people who want to be involved with the new station, and late night brainstorming with the core four or five people from the new radio station discussing timelines, budgets, radio principles, suppliers and political strategies.
If you'd like us to stop at your town and you are interested in organizing events, please write back as soon as possible to
Petri@prometheusradio.org- or call 215-727-9620. Sorry for the short lead time- hopefully we'll see you in about a month!
Look forward to visiting!

Need to get the word out about this... 03.01.2004 - 08:27 This is a great project. We need to get the word out about this project. There is such a longing in the this region to get more community news...instead of freedom broadcasting, clear channel and npr. One of my favorite radio stations in Oregon is KBOO in Portland. You can visit it at http://www.kboo.fm/index.php
I had a talk with the manager before I left Portland...she said that KBOO would be glad to share some of it's programing with Southern Cascadia...and we can use their format style to bring in more diverse voices to the region. when do we meet to discuss this. Where? what time? Z> waiting to hear from petri 04.01.2004 - 11:28 I am waiting to hear back from petri at Prometheus...when I do I will post possible dates and times, for initiating discussion points, venues and etc so that we can take most advantage of this excellent opportunity. suzia p.s. we have been in regular contact with Prometheus in the last three plus years while applying for a lpfm license here in the Rogue valley!
